Five minutes into the second to last day of my first steelheading trip, I found myself on the rocks, flat on my back, mourning the loss of what I thought was going to be my first steelhead. Left with nothing but a bruised ego and a bruised butt!

I have heard of some people catching a steelhead in the first five minutes of their experience, and I have heard of other people for whom it took five years to get their first. I definitely didn’t want to be in the latter category, so I gained my composure and proceeded to fish for another ten hours. Bingo! It finally happened, I got my first steelhead.

What an experience! I can see how people get addicted. Just like other subcategories of fly fishing, there are so many nuances and subtleties to figure out, not to mention a whole new category of gear I “need” to be more successful, from sink tips to Spey rods. Maybe I need to add a butt pad to that list of gear I “need.” 😂

They say you never forget your first love or your first steelhead! What an amazing trip and fishing experience—one I will never forget.

A summer road trip in July and our timing was on point! Swinging for bulls in the morning and fishing dries to cutties in the afternoon. It’s always good to get out of the city for a few days, it’s even better when the fishing is good. We ended each day with dinner on the front porch of a little cabin in the mountains. I couldn’t think of better way to spend summer vacation. I will never get sick of spending time on the river with my best friends 🐾🏔️

It’s not often I say a day of fishing kicked my butt! It was one of those situations where the further we went, the better the fishing was and the bigger the fish got. We got up so high the creek was only about one to two feet across, and that is where we found the biggest fish, and he was apparently smashing dry flies. It was SICK!!!! Carson Lisowski

Such a good day, however, I could have done without the long walk back to the truck, but I would do it again in a heartbeat!

In bed early, setting the alarm for 4:00 a.m. just to float some foam through a seam to try and trick a trout or two. That is what summer is about!

With the bow fishing this good, it makes it hard to leave, but I think it’s time for a trip to the mountains, where the trout don’t care if you sleep in, and North can stretch her legs, running along the river’s edge and maybe bump a grouse or two for a little bit of fun.

It’s been a challenging spring here in Southern Alberta. There has been lots of rain, which will be good in the long run, and lots of wind that is good for much except making it hard to cast. We have definitely had to work for each and every fish so far this year, but I can tell you one thing, it beats sitting on the couch. We were lucky enough to have a few small breaks in the weather where we were able to catch a few nice ones. Hopefully, some calmer, warmer days are in our future.

When I am in the mountains, by the river, and spending time with Darcy and North, I know this is what life is all about. If you spend time with those you love and engage in activities that make you truly happy, you will have no regrets. Time goes by too fast, so don’t waste a single second. Make big plans, do fun things, and share them with the ones you love. I can’t wait to experience all the joys this summer has in store! ⛰️❤️

Some big things happened in April! Literally huge things! Big and beautiful things! 😇

This brown trout was quite the specimen, and I wasn’t even expecting to catch anything that day. I was out for a spey casting lesson with my friend Rob, learning some new casts when, all of a sudden, there was a fish on the line. Prior to this brown, I had only caught one fish on the spey rod and wasn’t even sure how to fight a fish with such a long rod 😂. I saw it jump and knew it was a decent sized fish, but I had no idea how big it actually was! Thanks to the superb netting skills of Darcy, we were able to land the fish and admire its true beauty.

Then came my first set of elk antlers! In fact, it was my first set of any kind of antlers. Full disclosure: my friend found one, and I found the matching one. This set was so cool and unexpected because we had just found a group of bull elk with all their antlers. We thought we would have to come back the next week to see if they had dropped, but apparently, one of the big boys had already dropped, and we were lucky enough to find his sheds. 🦌

Last, but definitely not least, is my turkey! This big bird took so much hard work from both Darcy and me. This was our fourth year of turkey hunting, and we finally had success. After three years of disappointment, I was going into this season feeling a little defeated, but this was my year! On the first morning, we were up extra early, quietly making our way to the location. Darcy put out a couple of chirps, the hens came up the hill, and the tom followed right behind them, strutting his stuff. We didn’t move a muscle, my heart was racing as I took the shot. It was a clean shot at 22 yards, and he didn’t even see it coming. I was so thankful and excited, along with a whirlwind of other emotions. I couldn’t believe it! We took the bird home, processed it, and fed my family a turkey dinner that evening. What a satisfying meal, everyone was so grateful.🦃

You never know what the day ahead holds for your future!🌎
