Maternity photography is the session most women skip.

The reasons vary. The investment. The timing. The feeling that it is not really for them. That they are not the type.

And then the baby arrives. And the months pass. And one day they say to me: I wish I had photographs from when I was pregnant. I have nothing from that time.

Every single time.

Most of them said they weren't photogenic. They came anyway.

Some have been here since the first scan. Some arrived later and chose these kids anyway. Dad, step dad, bonus dad, grandad, the one who keeps showing up. The title matters far less than the showing up.

Your kids won't remember what you bought them. They'll remember the feeling of you.

There are two backdrops every year, and they do completely different jobs.

“A day at the snow” is the one you already have in your head. Everyone looking, everyone in it. The photograph the grandparents will keep on their fridge until next Christmas.

“Cookie making” (aka playdough cookies) is the one your kids will remember. You making something together, hands busy, nobody told to sit still. It is loud and it is real, and it is where the best photographs of the day always come from.

In September, I'm getting on a plane and flying to the other side of the world.

Destination: England, Ireland, Scotland.

I'm photographing a mum and her five children across three countries. A session unlike anything I've done before. and honestly, one I've been thinking about since the moment it was booked.

This is what destination photography means to me. Not just the photographs. the showing up. The being there for the whole story.
