Through the glass pane, the lone prawn stood there communicating with the 20 or so prawns in the tank next door. A glass panel stopping him being with his own kind, but not stopping him communicatimg with his own kind.

We will never know what these sea creatures think or feel, but in the absence of cold hard facts, we should assume they are no different to ourselves.

Everyone Needs A Mum

The first night Spartacus spent at Lefty's Place Farm Sanctuary was beside my bed in a brooder. He was so distressed and I had him bundled up in my jumper as long as I could, but I had to put him to bed in the end and he just stood there all night chirping. As I lay there with his distressed chirps ringing through my ears, all I could hear was "I Am Spartacus!" and "please make me safe". He did not sleep at all that night, he just stood there crying - crying for a mum and crying for safety.

Spartacus was purchased from the Thomastown market with his fluffy yellow brother by a family with kind intentions, but with no experience or information about raising such fragile babies without a mother. Spartacus's brother died and then the family went about seeking help and a new home for Spartacus.

The next morning when I took him to meet Cordelia, my forever broody Wyandotte, he fell asleep in her wing within 10 minutes of meeting her. It was a moment I could barely see to focus my camera such were the tears in my eyes. This was all he wanted and needed.

To think of the millions of chicks out there who are denied their mothers because we insist on eating eggs and meat. All the chicks out there who are denied mothers because of hatching programs, because of greedy breeders and because of stupid backyard chicken keepers who "want the kids to experience chicks". All these chicks want and need is a mum. Denying babies of mothers has to be one of the most insidious things you could do in this world.

Today is International Respect For Chickens Day. I have run a chicken sanctuary now since 2011 and my world is literally covered in people’s complete and utter disrespect for these birds. From the farms hens who arrive not knowing what straw is, to the neglected backyard hen who is dying and full of tumours due to not being given vet care because she was “just a chicken” - they have arrived here and realised someone sees them. Here is a little gallery of images of just some of the chickens who have lived their lives out here over the years.

These are Pekin ducks. They live in huge sheds full of their own waste. They have no water to swim in or clean themselves in. They die from infection, starvation from being unable to get up or from being stuck in the floor inches deep with their own waste. They are rounded up and sent to slaughter at 7-9 weeks old.

Their whole, short sad lives they live in fear and they never, ever get to feel water on their feathers.

She was taking her last breaths when we found her. She had egg yolk peritonitis and she had egg yolk leaking out of her. She literally only had minutes of her life left. We made the decision to move her to this cage alone, so she could die without being pecked or stood on by her cage mates. She would've died on the long walk to the car if we had taken her and her last moments would have been full of fear and stress. It's not a decision we took lightly. My light was turned off as soon as I took this and she died in that cage. She died with the sound of two women softly telling her they were sorry echoing around her.

Chickens die like this in egg farms everywhere. Yes, that includes free range farms. Just because you buy free range, it does not mean the hens aren't suffering and dying alone without kindness or love. They too are part of a huge money making business. Please ask yourself why you need eggs. Is it worth this suffering?

Some of them shake in fear whilst waiting in their crates at the abattoir. Some of them scream. Some of them hide. Some, like this hen, freeze in shock and fear. Some fight when rescued, some pretend to be dead. Even at the end of their miserable lives, when they have nothing left of themselves to give, they all act differently. They all respond differently to the shocking situation they find themselves in because they are all individuals. This is the hardest thing to get people to understand - every chicken is different.

Every chicken is a thinking, feeling individual.

1,000 plus comments on the second last photo I put up. I’ve been called a bitch, a scrag, a loser….all sorts of things just because I choose not to eat animals. I’ve been told to kill myself for uploading a photo. Why is kindness so scary for people to embrace or understand. Ive been posting photos on Facebook for a long time and I’ve copped it all, but the energy at the moment is worse than ever. People love their dogs yet are gleeful at a sheep begging for their life. People comment “yum” on a sheep photo whilst their profile picture is a dog. People want to save the brumbies whilst eating a cow. And these people cannot see that loving one animal yet eating another is insanity. Thanks for those few of you who stepped in to comment. I appreciate your support. X

We found this broiler chick wading through the faeces which was inches thick covering the floor of the broiler chicken farm. She was looking for any kind of liquid or food she could find because she was too small to reach the water and food feeders.

We named her "Spring".

She was 6 weeks old and was due (just like the tens of thousands of chickens who live with her in that farm) to be slaughtered that week.

Spring was put to sleep five days after rescue when it was very clear she could never be rehabilitated and was in too much pain to live a happy life.

She died loved and was buried. Her young soul able to rest and not be eaten by greedy humans.

This is a photo of a backyard butcher's set up. A bunch of crap thrown together to keep his sheep in whilst he slits their throats. He has about ten living sheep in the paddock behind just awaiting their turn to be put into this makeshift pen and slaughtered.

This happens so often, everywhere.

Egg yolk peritonitis occurs in laying hens when yolk from a developing egg or an incompletely shelled or ruptured egg is deposited within the body cavity. People who care properly for breeds such as Isa Browns, Leghorns and Hylines know about eyp all too well and it is something you need to be on alert for all the time if you care for these birds. These breeds have been selectively bred to lay as many eggs for us humans as possible and they basically lay themselves to death.

In egg farms, hens suffer from eyp without veterinary care, they fill up with infected egg yolk and die in the most prolonged, awful way. The hen in this image had eyp, one look at her hunched stance told me she had eyp and needed help. There’s at least one hen in each cage in cage egg farms that has eyp. Free range farm hens also suffer and die from eyp without any veterinary help, they are left to suffer and die without pain relief and without feeling safe.

There’s nothing kind about eggs, there is always a suffering hen behind that egg you are eating.

The Price Of Eggs.

*The hen in this image was rescued and received veterinary assistant and around the clock nursing and care. Sadly she was just so incredibly sick and didn’t make it.
