Following on from yesterday morning’s photo, here’s a little more of the Fitzroy River Barrage in action.

Several gates were open following the recent rain, with plenty of water making its way downstream into the tidal Fitzroy.

And yes… the music gets unnecessarily epic. 😂 I didn’t realise how much it built until I’d already edited the first few clips to it, and by then I was far too deep to turn back and find something else.

So apparently this is now the most dramatic barrage video ever made.

A bit of water moving through the Fitzroy River Barrage this morning. 🌊

Something you may not know is how the barrage’s gates actually operate.

The barrage has 18 vertical-lift gates which are remotely monitored and controlled by a computer system. Under normal operation, the gates automatically respond to changes in river level to help maintain the upstream storage at its predetermined height.

Council can also deliberately operate individual gates for managed releases when required, so I can’t say for certain what prompted this morning’s configuration - but several gates were certainly putting a decent amount of water through.

Built in 1970, the barrage separates the freshwater storage upstream from the tidal reaches downstream and can hold around 81,300 megalitres.

If you want to have a look from the ground, the open gates are currently visible from the end of MacAlister Street.

👀 Another development to keep an eye on in Rockhampton…

A development application has been lodged for 36 single-storey residential units at 40 Archer Street, alongside the CQ Military Museum.
The application, D/175-2026, was lodged on 7 October and is currently at the Information Request stage, so it has not been approved at this point.

ABC Capricornia reports that developer Pacifica submitted the application, with the proposal set to retain the former Drill Hall building and parade grounds while redeveloping the remainder of the site.

The Drill Hall dates back to 1906 and forms part of the heritage-listed former Archer Park Drill Hall Complex, which has a long association with Rockhampton’s military history.

There is also a separate application, D/133-2026, to subdivide the existing property from one lot into three.

The second image shows the approximate current property boundary at 40 Archer Street to give an idea of the overall size of the site, not the proposed 36-unit development footprint.

Definitely one I’ll be keeping an eye on as the applications progress.

Edit: Updated to clarify that the proposed development retains the heritage-listed Drill Hall and parade grounds, following additional information published by ABC Capricornia.

A few different perspectives from around The Causeway this morning 🌅

The light was pretty ordinary to begin with and I was starting to think the sunrise was going to be a bit of a dud, then the sun finally broke through and completely changed the scene.

Low tide also really shows off just how much this landscape shifts, with the channels, sandbanks and rocky shoreline all exposed.

And have a close look at image 3 and see if you can spot something interesting cruising through the water on the right-hand side of the bridge. 👀

I didn’t actually notice it until I was going through the photos afterwards.

🔥 If you’ve spotted smoke around The Caves this afternoon, no need for alarm.

The Caves Quarry is conducting a controlled burn on site, creating the large plume of smoke visible from surrounding areas.

This aerial was captured with permission from the quarry, and there was no active fire response underway at the time.

Certainly made for a pretty dramatic view from above though. 👀🔥

🚧 ROCKHAMPTON RING ROAD | OCTOBER 2026 UPDATE

Photo gallery update of the Rockhampton Ring Road, following the project from the Capricorn Highway end right through towards the northern works.

There’s a lot happening across the alignment now with major earthworks, overpasses taking shape, long sections of elevated roadway, and plenty of activity around the new Fitzroy River crossing.

The $1.98 billion project will deliver a 14.7km Western link of the Bruce Highway, including a new 435m bridge across the Fitzroy River and 18 bridges along the main Ring Road alignment. Early works began in November 2023, with the project moving into its main construction program in mid-2025. The construction program currently extends through to 2031.

I’ve captioned each photo with the area or works being shown, so have a scroll through and take a closer look, there’s plenty to spot in this one. 📸

👀 A little teaser before the next Rockhampton Ring Road photo update…

The first bridge girders are now going into place at the Alexandra Street overpass - another very visible milestone as this section of the project starts taking shape.
