MEET THE MT MORGAN MINER
THAT CHANGED A WAR.

Do you know the true story of Captain Oliver Woodward’s role in changing the course of WWI was turned into a film called Beneath Hill 60.

Before the war, he actually worked at the Mount Morgan mine.

Captain Oliver Holmes Woodward (1885–1966) was an Australian mining engineer, metallurgist, and decorated soldier who served with the 1st Australian Tunnelling Company during World War I.

Before dawn on June 7, 1917, twenty-one mines were prepared for detonation. Woodward was responsible for detonating the final two mines: Hill 60, which contained 53,000 pounds of ammonal explosives, and the Caterpillar, which contained 70,000 pounds of explosives.

British and Australian tunneling companies were the ones to initiate the offensive, which resulted in 19 out of the 21 total mines detonating in rapid, consecutive succession, transforming into a colossal fireball.

The detonation of nearly one million pounds of high explosives generated powerful shock waves that were reportedly felt as far away as London The largest non-nuclear explosion resulted in the deaths of 10,000 German soldiers and marked the commencement of a decisive victory during the Battle of Messines.

Sometimes you just stumble upon these awesome little hidden gems! Take the historic Ulam Upper State School, for example: it first opened its doors on August 29, 1892, as the Ulam Upper Provisional School, upgraded to a State School in 1909, and eventually closed back on November 5, 1961.

So, is it now located over at the upper Ulum recreational grounds, just across the road from its old spot? 😊

Wow, Singaporean Chinooks where flying right over me! The timing was just perfect! Out the back Of the Rockhampton airport Yesterday afternoon. 😊

It was so cool seeing a few Singaporean Chinooks and Apaches out at the Rockhampton airport! I managed to find a great little spot near the road to watch them, and I even got some awesome footage. I'll get that posted soon—it was amazing watching them fly right over the top! 😊

I recently came across three photographs documenting the establishment of the sugarcane industry in Yeppoon, which began in 1883.

The Yeppoon Sugar Company went into liquidation around 1895, and the mill finished up operations by 1903.

The first photo shows the manager's hut at a sugar plantation, the second one features the huts where the South Sea Islanders lived, and the third photo shows South Sea Islanders clearing land out at Farnborough, Yeppoon, back in 1895! 😊

Do you have any relatives whose names appear on this memorial?

The Bajool-Ulam War Memorial is a historic white marble obelisk situated in the town of Bajool, Queensland. It was unveiled on December 17, 1921, by Mr. F.H. Forde, M.L.A., before an audience of approximately 150 community members.

The cost of construction was £125, and the monument was built by the Rockhampton stonemason, G.H. Jenkins. It was crafted using local coarse sparkling Ulam marble and white marble quarried at Ulam.

The inscription reads: "1914 - Roll of Honour - 1919" and "For God, King and Empire."
