uber photography I'm Kate and I've photographed North Shore families for 23 years. Newborns, babies, maternity, kids, extended families and dogs. Nothing is posed.

My Gordon studio feels more like a home than a studio, so everyone relaxes. Sessions run under an hour. Looking back at their childhood, what do you hope they remember? You may not be able to bottle that thing that makes them irresistible but you can capture it and print it.

ĂĽber photography is located at Gordon, on Sydney's North Shore. It is run by a husband and wife team, Kate & Chris Buechner. Why should you choose ĂĽber photography? Kate is a mum to 3 kids of her own Felix 17, Max 15 and Millie 12 and her dog Immy and cat Sarah. As a mum she understands ways to help you relax and have fun with your kids. Kate's passion is photographing families in a natural way. She is able to capture the personalities of your kids through her photographs. Her ability to connect with your family means that she capture images that are a true reflection of your family. Kate is an associate of the AIPP. What does that mean for you? It means that she is bound by a code of ethics, she is required to have insurance, and continue with ongoing training. For you that means protection, and that you are dealing with an ethical photographer. She was won numerous awards at both state and National level with the AIPP, and has been a judge for the NSW AIPP awards for 2014/2015/2016, Queensland AIPP awards 2016 and National AIPP photography awards 2016. She won the AIPP NSW Family Photographer of the Year in 2011. She was awarded the Henry Talbot Award for service the to the AIPP in 2015. She was the NSW AIPP president from 2012-2014 and served on the NSW AIPP council from 2008-2014.

Hi everyone,

I get asked a lot whether a family session is just one big group photo. This family is a good example of why it isn't.

In the one session we did a sweet photo of mum and dad on their own, the kids lying across the bed with their stuffed toy, three of them squeezed onto a chair together, the family of four and then the whole group at the end.

Every combination tells a slightly different story, and they all end up meaning something different to the people in them.

So if you've got a mix of people you'd love photographed, bring them along. We'll work through the groupings together and nobody has to stand around for ages waiting their turn.

This session was a bit different to most of what I do, and I loved it.

Normally my studio is full of kids. This time it was two dogs, a cream one and a grey one, up on the stool side by side, then one of them sprawled on the floor refusing to give up a ball.

For this couple, those two are the kids. That's not a joke they make, it's just how it is. They're the ones who get the cuddles on the couch, the ones in every photo on their phones, the ones the whole house runs around.

I think a lot of people assume a portrait studio is for families with children. It isn't. If your family is you and your dog, or you and your partner and two dogs, that's a family and it deserves a proper photo on the wall. Not a blurry phone shot taken at the dog park.

Dogs are genuinely welcome here. They always have been.

I asked this little boy's mum to tell me who he is at seven months old. This is what she wrote.

"Our beautiful seven-month old son is full of personality. He can be cheeky with the sweetest little smile that melts our hearts, and other times he has the most adorable dazed expression that we can't help but laugh at. He has the cutest little dimple and wonderfully chubby cheeks that you just want to pinch. He gets really excited when he manages to stand up with a little assistance, while playing peek-a-boo, and talking with his favourite people."

The dazed expression. The peek-a-boo. Standing up with a bit of help and being so pleased about it.

None of that lasts. In six months he'll be a different little person doing different things, and she won't be able to remember the specifics no matter how sure she is right now that she will.

Which is why writing it down next to the photo matters as much as the photo does. If you do one thing this week, open your notes app and write a few lines about who your kids are at this exact age.

Look at the first photo. Three hands reaching in. Big sister's on the head, one on each little fist, and the baby just lying there wide awake and calm about the whole thing.

That's a new family of four in one frame.

I also love the one of the two of them together, big sister curled around her little sibling, and the one of all four of them sitting on the bed in the window light.

When there's an older sibling, I always want them in the photos properly. Not standing politely to the side. Right in there, holding the baby, being part of it.

If you're pregnant with your second, bring your first along. They're half the story.

Sometimes the simplest photos are the ones that stop me.

Mum and dad, both leaning in to kiss their brand new baby. In one they're sitting together on the bed by the window with their baby wide awake and looking around. In the other they're standing close, and their little one has snuggled in with eyes closed.

No props. No fuss. Just a new family, three of them, right at the beginning.

If you're expecting and wondering whether newborn photos are for you, this is what I love to create. Photos of your baby, but also of the two of you becoming parents.

This session has me smiling every time I scroll past it.

Rich dark backdrop, vintage outfits, a giant toy lion and a collection of teddies and little wooden animals. And then the kids, who were completely themselves.

The littlest one sat beside the lion with something firmly in their mouth, far too busy to care about the camera. In another frame there's a huge laugh from the older one in braces and a bow tie. And my favourite might be the flat cap cuddle, the two of them tucked in together with a teddy.

If you've been holding off on photos because your baby won't sit still, that's completely fine with me. Chewing, wriggling and giggling are all welcome here.

Hi everyone,

I had to share this one. Same brother and sister, 2019 and 2025.

In the first photo he's tiny, standing with his big sister's arm around him. Six years later they're sitting side by side in the studio and he's grown so much. (Also, there's a chicken. Of course there's a chicken.)

When you see your kids every day you don't notice it happening. The change is slow and then suddenly it isn't. It's only when you put two photos next to each other that it really hits you.

Watching families grow up over the years is one of my favourite parts of doing this for 23 years.

If the last proper photo of your kids is a few years old, pull it up and put it next to how they look today. You might be surprised.

That sleepy little smile mid dream is everything, and the family dog clearly wasn't going to miss out on meeting the new arrival.

Mum, dad, their brand new baby and the dog right in the middle of it all. Sessions like this are exactly why I love newborn photography so much, quiet, gentle and full of the whole family, four legs included.

He was their first baby. Now he’s a big brother, and he’s got the bandana to prove it.

This is one of my favourite parts of a newborn session.

The dog who’s been the centre of everything gets to meet the new little person, and you get to keep that moment forever.

He sat right beside the baby, gave a gentle sniff to say hello and kept a close eye on me the whole time.

If your dog was your first baby, they belong in your newborn photos too.

Dogs are always welcome in my studio, and I work around them just as much as I work around your baby.

Your dog is family. These photos should show that.

This October I'm choosing 10 families to come into my Gordon studio with their dog. A relaxed session for everyone, partners, kids and the dog right in the middle where they belong. You take home an 8x8 wooden print and the matching digital file, worth $790 all up.

My studio is fully contained, so your dog can be off the lead and just relax. No stress, no chasing them around.

Send me a message with your dog's name and I'll send you the entry details.
