The very first photos were once all shot in black and white.

Even before the first permanent colour image came to fruition in 1861, black and white photographs had been around almost 35 years. Still to this day, it is a timeless, valuable and authentic way to capture a moment in time.

It’s a technical skill not for the faint hearted, as the world is far from being black or white; there are many shades of colour in between. Every day we see a world full of colour and can often be blinded by our daily existence, not seeing the true beauty of each moment. To be transported to a memory or junction in time, purely in black and white, makes us pause, look more closely and pay more attention to the subject at hand.

That is where the passion lies for Nicholas Fiennes, artist and owner of Fine Photography - specialists in black and white portraiture photography.

A picture in black and white isn’t boring, in fact it portrays an indescribable magic nearly impossible to explain - a feeling, an emotion.
