Outdoor headshots can be absolute magic. Natural light. Beautiful depth. Real world texture.

But here’s the secret most people miss… the background has to suit the person.

The location should support your story, not distract from it.

For example:

• A corporate lawyer in front of graffiti at a skate park? Probably not ideal.
• A financial planner against a chaotic playground? That’s a lot of “risk” energy.
• A wellness coach surrounded by traffic lights and construction cones? Not exactly calm.
• A tech founder posed outside a grand old courthouse? Mixed messaging.
• A children’s entertainer in a dark industrial loading dock? That’s a different kind of party.

When I choose an outdoor location for a headshot, I’m thinking:

✔ Does this reflect their brand?
✔ Will their audience instantly “get” it?
✔ Is the background enhancing them, not stealing attention?

Clean architectural lines can feel polished and professional. Greenery feels fresh and approachable. Urban textures can work beautifully for creatives. The right setting adds context without overpowering the subject.

Your headshot isn’t just about looking good. It’s about looking right for what you do.

If you’re considering an outdoor headshot and not sure where it should be taken, let’s chat. The location matters more than you think.

If your team is wearing branded tops in your photos, they should be the star of the show ⭐

You have invested in embroidered logos, custom shirts or branded tees for a reason. They represent your business. But in photos, I often see logos hidden under hair, cropped out of the frame or competing with busy backgrounds.

When planning branding or team photography, keep this in mind:

• Make sure the logo is clearly visible
• Choose backgrounds that help it stand out
• Keep the rest of the outfit simple and clean
• Check that the logo size works well on camera
• Steam and prepare garments so they look polished

Branding photography is all about intention. Small details like logo placement and colour contrast can make a huge difference to how professional your business appears online.

If you are organising updated team photos or branding images in Sydney, take a moment to think about how your branded clothing will photograph. It is a simple step that elevates your entire visual presence.

He arrived at his branding shoot wearing a green three piece suit.

Not navy. Not grey. Not playing it safe.

Green. Waistcoat. Confidence.

And honestly… I was thrilled.

One of my favourite parts of this job is capturing what makes someone unmistakably them. The details that set them apart. The way they stand. The way they hold eye contact. The wardrobe choice that says, “This is who I am.”

A headshot should never dilute your personality into something bland. It should reflect your energy, your professionalism, and your individuality.

The green suit was not about being flashy. It was about alignment. It suited him perfectly, and our job was simply to capture that presence in a polished, professional way.

If you are thinking about updating your headshots, here is your reminder: you do not have to blend in to look professional.

Sometimes the bold choice is exactly the right one.

There is something incredibly powerful about photographing women who are aligned in purpose and message.

I recently worked with Sabina, Nicole and Belinda to create branding images for their podcast 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘁 | 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 | 𝗕𝗼𝗱𝘆 and the focus was so much more than just taking a great photo.

When I photograph groups, it is about capturing connection. The way they stand together. The energy between them. The confidence and clarity that reflects what they do and who they serve.

Strong branding photography helps you:

• Show alignment and collaboration
• Build trust before someone even visits your website or presses play
• Create consistent imagery across your podcast artwork, website and social media
• Communicate professionalism and personality in one frame

If you run a podcast, partnership or leadership team, your imagery should tell your story just as clearly as your words do.

You can listen to 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘁 | 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 | 𝗕𝗼𝗱𝘆 here: https://lnkd.in/dxakiWMB

If you are looking for branding photography in Sydney for your team or business, I would love to help you create images that truly reflect your brand.

Not all of my headshots are taken against a plain studio backdrop.

While a clean, neutral background is timeless and incredibly versatile, sometimes adding a simple location creates a more relaxed and modern feel.

This image of Tina Brown was photographed against a white wall with soft greenery in the background. It’s still professional and polished, but the natural elements add warmth and personality without distracting from her.

A subtle background like this can:

• Make the image feel more approachable
• Add visual interest while staying clean
• Suit personal branding and modern corporate profiles
• Reflect a more relaxed, authentic style

The key is balance. The background should support the subject, not compete with them.

Professional does not always have to mean plain. It just needs to be intentional.

The Psychology Behind a Slight Head Tilt

It’s a tiny movement. Most people don’t even realise they’re doing it.

But a slight tilt of the head in a professional photo can completely change how you’re perceived.

Body language studies show that a small head tilt signals openness and approachability. It softens your presence while still maintaining confidence.

In headshots and branding photography, that balance matters.

A straight, squared pose communicates authority.
A subtle tilt adds warmth and relatability.

For business owners, leaders and professionals, this can help you appear:

• More approachable
• More trustworthy
• Emotionally intelligent
• Engaged and attentive
• Confident without being intimidating

Your headshot is often your first impression on LinkedIn, your website or in marketing materials. Small details influence how people feel about you before you even speak.

The right pose is not random. It’s strategic.

3 Posing Tricks That Make Anyone Look More Confident on Camera

Think you are awkward in photos? Try these:

✔ Roll your shoulders back and down
✔ Shift your weight slightly instead of standing flat
✔ Lower your chin just a little to define your jawline

These small tweaks instantly make you look more confident and natural.

Most people do not need to change how they look. They just need the right guidance.

If you are updating your headshots or portraits, these simple posing tricks make all the difference.

There is something powerful about a crisp, clean headshot.

Soft grey background. Relaxed, friendly expression. Smart casual styling.

Professional without being overly corporate.

This style of image is incredibly versatile. Perfect for LinkedIn, business websites, team pages, speaker profiles and marketing materials.

If you want a headshot that feels modern, confident and approachable, clean simplicity often works best.

Glasses. The tiny panes of personality that can either elevate a portrait… or hijack it entirely. 👓✨

If you wear glasses, you’ve probably seen it before.
• Glare bouncing back like a spotlight audition.
• Reflections revealing softboxes, windows or the poor photographer waving in the background.
• Lenses turning opaque so your eyes disappear behind a milky haze.
• Frames casting sneaky little shadows under the eyes.

It is not the glasses’ fault. It is physics having a party.

Here is where a professional photographer earns their keep.

We adjust the angle of the light, not just the camera. We slightly tilt the frames, reposition the subject, or feather the lighting so reflections bounce away instead of straight back into the lens. Sometimes we raise the light source. Sometimes we lower it. Occasionally, we micro-adjust the glasses themselves by a few millimetres. Tiny tweaks. Big difference.

The goal is simple.
Keep the glasses. Keep your personality. Keep your eyes crystal clear.

Because glasses are part of your identity. They frame your face, your expression, your intelligence, your style. The trick is making sure they enhance the portrait instead of stealing the show.

When it’s done well, no one says, “Great job avoiding glare.”
They say, “You look amazing.”

And that is exactly the point.

Choosing a photographer can feel a bit like online dating.

Everyone looks amazing at first glance. But are they actually the right fit for you?

If you’re booking headshot photography in Sydney, here’s what really matters:

✨ Consistency - not just one great hero shot
✨ A style that matches your brand
✨ Professional lighting and technical skill
✨ Clear direction so you feel confident (not awkward)
✨ Strong communication and a smooth process
✨ Real local credibility
✨ Value over price
✨ Strategic thinking - not just “nice photos”

Your headshots are often your first impression. Make sure they work for you.

If you’re looking for polished, confident and authentic headshots in Sydney, choosing the right photographer makes all the difference.

Tradies, this one’s for you. 🔧📸

If your current profile photo was taken in the ute… from below… with the steering wheel cutting across your chin… we need to talk.

Your work is solid. Your reputation matters. Your photo should match.

A professional image as a tradie is not about being fancy. It is about being trustworthy.

Here is why it matters:

• Clients Google you before they call
• Builders check who they are hiring
• Real estate agents want reliable contractors
• Social media is your modern word of mouth

A proper headshot shows you are established, credible and proud of your business. It says, “I take my work seriously.”

And unlike the classic up-the-nose selfie, a professional image:

• Uses flattering angles
• Has clean lighting
• Highlights your personality
• Can include your tools, van or workspace
• Looks sharp on your website, quotes and invoices

People hire people. Especially in the trades. When clients can see the face behind the business, trust builds faster.

You do quality work. Your photo should too.
