I think one of my favourite things about maternity sessions is watching the excitement through the eyes of an older sibling 🤩

The baby might still be months away, but somehow they already seem to understand that something special is happening!

The little cuddles, the questions, the constant checking in on Mum

It's such a sweet time with the waiting, excitement, and wondering what life is going to look like when the newest member of the family finally arrives!!

This little lady was already taking her big sister duties very seriously 🤎

Lately, I've been thinking about how much my expectations of photography have changed over the years…

When I first picked up a camera, I thought being a good photographer meant knowing all the right poses. Knowing exactly where people should stand, where to put their hands, and how to create the "perfect" image

The longer I've been doing this, the more I've realised photography isn't always about directing every little detail. Sometimes it's about noticing

Noticing the way two people look at each other, the way someone reaches for a hand without thinking. The little moments happening in between everything else

Maybe that's why some of my favourite images are the ones that weren't planned at all!!

The ones that simply happened, and I was lucky enough to be there when they did 🤎

What about you? Do you prefer the perfectly posed photos or the candid moments in between?

I've mentioned it briefly before, but in August I'll be heading off to Port Douglas for another photography retreat, and honestly, now that it's getting closer, I'm so bloody excited!! 🤩

The last retreat completely changed the direction of my business!

It pushed me creatively, challenged me, introduced me to some incredible people, and somewhere along the way, Barefoot Ember started becoming what it is today

So it's funny, because while I'm excited about the destination, that's not really what I'm looking forward to most...

It's everything I'll learn, create, experience, and bring home with me 🤎

I think sometimes people hear “maternity session” and instantly think it has to just be belly photos or perfectly posed images!!

But honestly, I’m loving documenting these sessions in a way that feels a little more real 🤎

The chaos, the cuddles, the little personalities, the quiet moments in between, all the things that make this chapter what it actually is!

Because when a new baby arrives, it’s not just one person growing, the whole family grows too 🥹

I’ve had quite a few maternity/family enquiries lately, and I am honestly loving leaning more into this side of things. It feels a little less about “perfect photos” and a little more about capturing families exactly as they are Xx

I think the older I get, the more I realise the moments that end up meaning the most aren’t usually the big dramatic ones 🤎

It’s the quiet little details….

The textures, the tiny in-between moments, the things that might seem ordinary now, but years later will bring you straight back to that moment!

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the big “OH MY GOD” moments too 🥹

But without the quieter in-between pieces, the story just wouldn’t feel complete!!

I think that’s a huge part of what Barefoot Ember has become to me over time, not just photographing people, but documenting feelings, memories, and all the little pieces that tell a story Xx

I honestly think this trip was the moment I fully fell in love with elopements 🥹

I’d already been thinking about heading more in that direction after my first big wedding, but after this retreat and creating photos like this over there… I was sold!!

It wasn’t even about everything being “perfect” either. Half the time, we were just wandering around, finding little pockets of beauty wherever we could 🤎

But there was something about it all, the adventure, the storytelling, the slower, more intentional feeling of it, that completely lit a fire in me!

Safe to say this trip left a pretty big mark on me creatively Xx

Do you guys have bucket list places you’ve always dreamed of going? ✈️

Honestly, I don’t think I even realised travel was on mine until I took my first overseas trip… and then suddenly I wanted to go everywhere!!

I probably should have listened to my Godmother years ago, honestly (she’s a serial traveller and a very bad influence hahaha) 🤣

Me and my hubby did Europe/UK in 2023, and wow… it was the biggest trip we had ever done, and I still don’t think I’m over it!!

I’ve actually been lucky enough to go twice now, the second time for work, and honestly, I would go back again in a heartbeat (destination elopement anyone? 👀😂)

There’s just something about the old buildings, the history and the feeling of it all. We just don’t have anything quite like it here in Australia

Wandering around places you’ve only ever seen in photos. It never really leaves you 🤎
