A Magical Morning Visit 🐦🍎
This morning we woke up to the wonderfully noisy calls of a family of Green Wood Hoopoes right outside our bedroom window! 🐦❤️
Mom and Dad were busy feeding their chicks, enjoying the apple we had put out on the bird feeder the night before. What an incredible experience to watch these spectacular birds so close up, right from our bedroom!
This is the first time Green Wood Hoopoes have visited our bird feeder, making the moment even more special. 🥰
Nature has a wonderful way of bringing the most beautiful surprises right to our doorstep. 🌿🐦🍎

Green Wood Hoopoe,
in Afrikaans Rooibekkakelaar or Gewone Kakelaar.
Appearance:
It has glossy metallic green and purple feathers, a long curved red bill, and a long tail with white markings.
Behavior: These noisy birds live in family groups and make a loud, cackling sound.

Jasper and I, together with our good friends Vaughan and Monica Kew, had an amazing time exploring the park and enjoying the incredible wildlife and birdlife it has to offer.
Together, we managed to capture 63 different bird species! 📸🐦 What an incredible experience and wonderful memories shared with friends. ❤️

📸 Mabula Game Lodge – February 2025 🐾🌿

A few memories from our wonderful stay at Mabula Game Lodge in February 2025. The weather certainly didn’t play along — lots of cloudy skies and rain! ☁️🌧️
But even with the weather, we had an absolutely fantastic time. The bush has a special kind of magic in every season, and we loved every moment of our getaway. 🦁🐘🦒❤️

Bird of the month - Giant Kingfisher - photo taken in St Lucia 2012.
In Afrikaans - Reusevisvanger.
The Giant Kingfisher is the largest kingfisher in Africa, measuring up to 46 cm in length and weighing between 255 and 425 grams.
Recognizable by its large, shaggy crest, heavy black bill, and black plumage speckled with white, the species is widespread across sub-Saharan Africa.
It is frequently found patrolling the rivers, lakes, and estuaries of South Africa, particularly in well-wooded, permanent bodies of water.
