These are the unsung recycling heroes of South Africa.

I see them pushing their big, unsteady recycling loads up and down the streets in order to make a living and to survive. Recycling plays a crucial role in reducing waste, conserving natural resources and protecting landfills from becoming bigger and bigger.

These men and women of the streets, who look into your trash bins, should be acknowledged and respected for countless hours of dumpster diving and reducing your waste.

So, next time you are taking out the trash, please separate your recycling and put it at the top of your dustbin. I always fill up empty water bottles and leave out old clothes or food that is still edible. They are people - just like me and you and we all need to help each other even if it's in the smallest ways.
