Danie Nel Photography

Danie Nel Photography Commercial photographer and filmmaker in Cape Town, South Africa. Thus, I can still say I'm a specialised "photograper". I love what I do. Hopefully, so do you.l

Danie Nel Photography has been operating in Cape Town since 2000 in the fields of publishing, advertising, public relations, stock and wedding photography. Having built the business on editorial imagery largely, I was forced to get acquianted with all manners of genres and shooting. Even though my style has evolved to narrow a bit more into wine, food, people and cars, the things that pass through my lens are still legion.

Winemakers' hands have an excuse to be dirty. Winemaking has tactile elements all through the process, from soil to glass, and the hands play a big part every step of the way. Shooting hands, especially hands in the foreground of an image, is nothing new, but it can still be very effective. I invariably have hands prominent in at least some images. Even clichés become clichés for a reason. Wade Roger-Lund from during harvest 2026.

Continuing my winemaker portrait 'series', this is a special one, from 2012. Aubert de Villaine, cellar master of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in Vosne Romanée, Burgundy. I had the opportunity to go down into his small alcove cellar, where some bottles were a hundred years old. I have a small vudeo of this on my channel on Youtube too.

The / winemaking team are artists and achievers. It took about 5 images composited, a smoke machine, a bunch of lights and a team of workers to clean the little shed where we took the pic.

I decided that I will keep portraits of winemakers the theme on my page for a while, as this is the part of shooting 'wine' I probably enjoy most.

I photographed of recently. Most winemakers, in my experience, are up for a laugh or trying something fun. They are artist-scientists after all.

For my 6th and last installation of portraits for the .co.za New Generation Winemaker awards, we have who is no stranger to awards. Here, reimagining some classic poses, using a vine!

The fifth installment of portraits I took for .co.za New Generation Awards is of from - just because somewhat comes across as reserved doesn't mean they are not willing to jump for a picture. Or throw wine! In fact, she was the catalyst for every portrait thereafter being very wet!

For the 4th installment of portraits I took of the finalists for the .co.za New Generation Winemaker Awards, from is featured here. It shows visually the progression from you getting your hands on a bottle of good Steen, taking the first sniff and taste... to absolute chaos. Well, Christiaan was super game to do this shot when I suggested it, and let's face it, if you are going to chuck half a bottle of wine down your gullet, it might as well be the Skoolblok Steen 2025 (Steen is the traditional South African name for Chenin Blanc.) Mad fun.

It is a bit "meta", yet strangely insightful, to edit a video about 's Cabernet Sauvignon 2024, while drinking it! It is an indulgence I allow myself when I am editing on a weekend night. (Drinking a glass of wine, not drinking whatever I am editing!) Delicious! The stake I am about to braai will match perfectly. "Beefy!" ;) Really delicious. Thank you, Eddie for the gift, it much appreciated. .media
