Here are 5 things I do differently than a lot of newborn photographers and why I think it matters.
1. My sessions last up to 2 hours. Many newborn photographers will take 3-5 hours for a newborn session. In my opinion, this is too much stress on baby, Mom, and siblings in the first couple weeks of life. Baby doesn’t need to be a model for photos. Mom doesn’t need to be away from home for that long. And the family doesn’t need to be split up during such a big transition. Great photos take time, but not that much if you know what you’re doing.
2. I’ve seen photographers insist they must get every pose of baby. This isn’t the case for me. My sessions are very baby led. If baby seems uncomfortable in a pose, I’ll move on. That doesn’t mean less photos, I’ll get more angles and variety in a pose they like.
3. My family portion of the photos is quick! I want Mom to be able to sit and relax during photos, not feel like she is to be on for long periods. Postpartum is already stressful on her mind, body, and emotions. Photos should be peaceful and easy for her.
4. Sibling photos are not forced. Yes, Mom wants a photo of her kids altogether and I’ll do everything I can to get that - except stress out a toddler that just had their world change over night! If they are scared, crying or obviously not going to be near baby I move on. It’s better to get a family shot with the toddler comfortable in Dads arms than force an interaction that causes stress with their new sibling. This makes photos a scary thing in the future and they should be able to ease into moments with their new baby sibling on their time!
5. My space is designed with you in mind! A cozy couch, a snack and coffee bar, postpartum care items in the bathroom for Mom. I make sure that while I’m working, you can relax and enjoy the experience. That’s why I have everything we’ll need for baby as well.
