Look WHOOoo visted my yard in downtown Woodland last night 👀🦉

Seeing a Barred Owl in the Pacific Northwest is always a cool experience, but this species is a bit controversial! Barred Owls are not native to the region and have expanded their range into the Pacific Northwest, where they compete with native Northern Spotted Owls for habitat and resources. While it’s exciting to spot one in the wild, their presence can have serious consequences for the native owl species that already call this region home.

🇮🇸 Happy Leif Erikson Day! 🇮🇸

Standing infront of Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík, Iceland, is a statue of Leifur Eiríksson (Leif Erikson), a Norse explorer believed to have been one of the first Europeans to reach North America, roughly 600 years before Christopher Columbus.

Born around 970 CE, Leif was the son of Erik the Red, the founder of the Norse settlement in Greenland. Around the year 1000, Leif sailed west to a land the Norse called Vinland, what we now think was present-day North America.

Centuries later, his legacy of exploration is commemorated in iceland, with a statue gifted by the United States in 1930 to mark the anniversary of Iceland’s Alþingi, one of the world's oldest parliamentary institutions.

A fitting tribute to a man whose voyages carried him beyond the known world of his time... 🇮🇸
