I created a multichannel video and music installation together with Strijbos & Van Rijswijk Strijbos & Van Rijswijk

Signpost was filmed at the melting Dachstein Glacier in Austria, that will disappear in the next thirty years. The installation combines the videos by Robin de Puy with live recordings of soprano voices, sound compositions and testimonies from people who live in and with this landscape. In the libretto, the human poses questions to mother nature, first in the present tense, then in the future tense once the glacier has disappeared.

Their names are Saker (7), Ali (6), Gahlid (4) and Sari (3). With my back seat fully loaded with the four giggling, chubby captains, I drive to my house. The car ride makes the guys a little less loud. When I look out into my rear-view mirror, I see faces beaming with joy and full of expectation. They make me happy. A few minutes later when we arrive at my home, we are all bummed the car ride is over.

The first time I took their picture I barely lasted 15 minutes. They drank cough syrup like lemonade, which made them jump around uncontrollably like bouncing balls. While one of them took my car key and threatened to throw it off the balcony, the other had suddenly confiscated my camera. Somehow, I managed to take a few pictures, but I was not really happy with them. So, we made a new appointment. Slow and steady wins the race.

Once we get to my house, I maneuver them from the rather busy road to my yard. They remind me of tame baby ducks - following me wherever I go, hungry for attention, twirling around me. I decide to take their picture on a floating raft. It is wobbly and they are not having it. The bold, loud boys of five minutes ago are gone as they have been thrown off their game, only making small squealing noises. Eventually I manage to get them all on the raft. I can barely breathe, afraid a bird - or anything, for that matter - will break their attention. We only last a few minutes. As soon as I have taken the picture, they run onto dry land and together we cheer with joy.

Since then, I regularly stop by their house, and they also come to mine. They always ask me: “Are you here to take our picture? Can we have another ride in your car? Are we going to your house?” Recently, Saker confessed that he had found the way to my house and sat in my yard briefly. Bit by bit, my home is also becoming the home of others.

Episode 19 - A Fun Little Toy
James (41), Austyn and Ryder, Scottsburg, Indiana

His eyes seem weary and concerned, but when James looks at his sons, I see a small sparkle. After years of fleeing the grief over losing his mother, Robin, James decided one night that his lonely existence had to come to an end. “I’d become a workaholic and didn’t want to live out of a suitcase anymore. I decided to come home, take a giant pay cut and start a family.”

“Look what I got!” Austyn, the eldest, yells. He shows me his homemade scoop net - a plastic water bottle cut in half, with a string tied through one end. The rain has created a stream along the railroad tracks. “I’m trying to catch fish,” he says. Meanwhile Austyn’s little brother, Ryder, fires colorful staples everywhere with his stapler, which he calls “a fun little toy.”

Night falls, and the hardness of the day becomes a soft blanket that embraces us gently. A train approaches. The train driver honks his horn loudly and waves at the boys with a big smile. For minutes, dozens of carriages pass by. The squeaking, crunching steel is in stark contrast to the still-young, small bodies of the boys. Ryder aims his little stapler at the train, glancing past an imaginary barrel, and fires. He knows his feet are not allowed past the stop line, but his whole body leans just a bit further. Austyn is unfazed by the rumbling train, focusing instead on his fishies. When the seemingly endless train has finally passed, it leaves me with a lump in my throat.

Their temporary home - something in between an apartment and a barn - is directly adjacent to the railroad tracks. “We are allowed to live here temporarily because of a friend, the owner of the [neighboring] recycling center. This way we can save some money,” James says. “Hopefully, we can eventually find a nice, and more permanent, place to live.”

For this project, I stepped into the role of a motel receptionist, one that I know well having grown up in a hotel myself. Travelling through America, I created a series of cinematic self-portraits and films inspired by the stories I encountered along the way.

The Receptionist is a project I’ve been working on for years, as a guide, as a mirror. Watching America through the eyes of the receptionist, and through her eyes everything comes together: the people I met and the motels themselves.

For this project, I stepped into the role of a motel receptionist, one that I know well having grown up in a hotel myself. Travelling through America, I created a series of cinematic self-portraits and films inspired by the stories I encountered along the way.

Technology is taking over more and more. But what do we lose along the way? Thinking Hands is about the knowledge that lives in our body. In making, in touching and in feeling. Knowledge that you cannot simply put into data or into a computer. What does the body know that the mind does not?
