Loved working with on his portraits in his Norwalk Art Studio! He needed professional photos for his social media and website and he knew that hiring the right photographer was important..

Not every photographer is a headshot photographer. Some focus on weddings or families, and only occasionally take on headshot work. While they may be talented, headshots are a unique skill set.

A photographer who specializes in headshots understands how to use lighting and angles to flatter all face shapes, how to guide expressions, and how to create a comfortable experience for people who don’t love being in front of the camera.

"📸 I adjust my strobe lights depending on the bone structure and body type of the person I’m photographing to make sure the lighting on their face is the most flattering possible.

👉 Every person’s facial structure is different and moving the main light just a few inches one way or another can completely change the look of the shadows. But one thing is for certain, following the traditional lighting setup for headshots is no longer necessary for photographers who are looking to achieve a more natural result.

📸 PREPARING FOR YOUR HEADSHOT SESSION 📸

Whether you opt for a professional photographer or DIY, here are some tips for a successful headshot session:

👗 Wardrobe: Choose clothing that reflects your industry and personal brand. Avoid distracting patterns and opt for solid colors or subtle textures.

💇‍♀️ Grooming: Pay attention to grooming details like hair, makeup, and facial hair. Schedule haircuts and any necessary grooming about 2 weeks in advance.

🕺 Posing: Practice different poses and expressions in front of a mirror or with a friend. Consider your industry and the image you want to project. If you’re working with a photographer, make sure they know how to pose for best results and will be coaching you throughout the session.

🌟 Location and Lighting: Select a well-lit location with ample non-direct light if possible. If you're indoors, use soft, diffused lighting like that coming through a window. Keep an eye out for deep shadows or distracting background elements that can interfere with your photo. And if you’re coming to a professional studio for your headshot session, the photographer should have perfect lighting ready to go for you, just make sure you like their work before you hire them as they will probably produce something very similar for you.

👉️ If you have a website, you should definitely have an “About Us” or “About Me” page on it dedicated to allowing potential clients to get to know you a bit. Having a good-quality portrait on this page can be the difference between being hired for a job, and not.

✅ If you think about it, most of the time we select our doctor, or real estate agent, our dentist, or many other professional persons we hire by what they look like online. If someone doesn’t look friendly or trustworthy on their website, you’ll definitely be less inclined to work with them.. that’s why this page is such a great use for your new headshots!

➡️ Every client receives wardrobe guidance via email immediately when booking their photoshoot so there’s plenty of time to shop for something new if needed. The goal is to have 4-6 good outfit options on hand for us to choose from - the final decision doesn’t have to be made right now, you just need to have options.

✅ We will go through your clothing together once you arrive for your headshot and select the best outfits for you right then and there. And if you feel more comfortable and prefer to make that selection yourself, you’re also welcome to come to the Studio ready to be photographed, but it’s still a great idea to prepare your clothes at this time to make sure you’re set with what you need.

If you show up thinking of this as a "task" to check off, that tension is going to show up in your jaw and your eyes.

(Note: Zero tension, pure joy! Today’s featured client brought the best energy to the Studio, and it absolutely shows in their eyes. 😁)

Think of this as an investment in your career. When you show up with an open mind and the willingness to work together, the session actually becomes fun. I try to handle everything for you, as much as I can - from wardrobe tips to a 48-hour turnaround on your final retouched shots.

The best headshots aren't about perfection. They're about authenticity, confidence, and connection. Avoiding these common mistakes helps you walk away with an image that feels like you - and that's what people respond to most.

DIY VS. PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOTS

While it's possible to take a high-quality headshot on your own, there are distinct advantages to investing in a professional photographer:

📸 Expertise: A professional headshot photographer understands lighting, composition, and posing techniques that can significantly enhance your headshot.

🏆 Quality: Professional equipment and editing tools can result in a higher quality image.

🎨 Customization: A professional can tailor your headshot to your industry and personal brand, helping you stand out.
