Day 3, I met Ed Hunt in Pembroke, NC. He grew up on the same land he now farms - when his grandfathers built the family farm. His community is the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina - officially recognized as the 575th federally recognized tribe in the U.S. in December of 2025.
Despite the poverty in the area, as he says, he is rich if he can provide for others. With a background in environmental science, he is expanding not only his farmland but the local conservation and education efforts.

I can't wait for you to hear more of his story.

Day 2 of filming Sustainable Ground I visited Niki and Brandon Gerrins. They own and operate Sonkissed Meadows in Sylacauga, Alabama. Their cows, pigs, chickens, and vineyard create a quintessential picture of a small farming business. They sell to their local community, which is typical for livestock since the path to larger distribution is dominated by four firms nationwide.

Also, Brandon talked about how financial struggles are causing many farmers to quit. The cost to farmers is high while the willingness of the people to pay higher prices for their meat (especially for quality meat) does not always match the cost.

That is only part of their story and only part of the national story.

Today, we move on to Atlanta.

Day 1 of filming Sustainable Ground.
I met Mark Godwin and his family - one of the only two shrimp farmers in America. They are 5th generation shrimp farmers with heart and passion for not only what they do but how they do it. It was incredible to hear their stories and how they are using sustainable practices to produce the best shrimp you can get anywhere in the world. Truly.
