To be loved is to be known.

During her vows, Simrat spoke about how much it meant to her that throughout their relationship, Jill had invested time and energy into understanding her Punjabi culture. A willingness to learn, to ask questions, to listen, and to embrace the traditions, values, and experiences that helped shape the person she fell in love with.

And that love was woven throughout the day itself. In the traditions they chose to honor. In the details that carried meaning. In the intentional blending of cultures, families, and histories.

The result was a celebration that felt deeply personal and richly layered—a reflection of two people who had done the work of knowing one another fully. One timeline choice I find myself recommending again and again? Working with your planner to create several short windows for couples portraits throughout the day.

Instead of disappearing for an hour all at once, we’ll sneak away for 10-15 minutes at a time—after your first look, during cocktail hour, at sunset, or even for a few moments once the dance floor is in full swing.

The result is often *more* variety in your gallery, with different lighting, energy, and backdrops woven throughout the day. But even more importantly, it creates space for the two of you to reconnect. To hold hands, exchange a few words, and actually process the fact that you’re married.

The best portraits happen when they feel like a natural extension of the celebration—not another item to check off the list. A few quiet moments together, sprinkled throughout the day, can make all the difference.

The same image, in two forms. Which do you prefer?

Color tells one kind of story through the warmth of skin tones, the richness of florals, the way light wraps around a moment and makes it feel alive. It captures the atmosphere exactly as it was: layered, vivid, and full of nuance.

Black and white, though, strips everything back to its essence. It quiets the noise and lets emotion take center stage. Movement, contrast, expression—suddenly they speak a little louder.

What makes a wedding truly beautiful, in the eyes of a wedding photographer? Presence.

Of course I notice the stunning florals, the layered tablescapes, the candlelight flickering just right. Thoughtful design will always matter to me—it shapes the atmosphere and tells part of the story.

But what moves me most is when a couple gives themselves permission to fully settle into the day. To look around and really see the people who traveled near and far to celebrate them. To hold hands under the table during dinner. To stay wrapped up in conversation a little longer than planned. To let the night unfold instead of trying to perfectly manage every second of it.

The weddings that photograph most beautifully are almost always the ones where the couple is genuinely experiencing them in real time, like C&A’s Foxen Canyon Ranch wedding in the Santa Ynez Valley, which featured both beautiful design and a beautiful sense of presence.
