Today on October 27th, 1956, 2-2-574 was transmitted at 04:03hrs for 471-473 5th Ave at 112th Street.

The fire started in the electrical service line on the exterior of the building housing the Army & Navy Store and extended inside, wrecking the store & causing damage to the Dania Hall on the 2nd floor. The connected building next door also suffered heavy damage as the fire extended in the walls.

Other businesses damaged were Howie's Watch Shop on the 112th Street side and the Roxy Cleaners Store north of the Army & Navy store.

Chief Carl Smith noted difficulties fighting the fire because the Army & Navy store was "crammed full of stock" making it difficult for firemen to move.

Pumpers 11, 12, 4, 8, Trucks 1 & 3, the Squad Co., Bttn Chief Lieback and Chief Carl Smith responded. The outtap was transmitted at 06:55hrs.

This building would be destroyed in another, much more serious fire in March 1959.
