We were just past sunset when the moon decided to join this crew's family photos. I’m not saying the sky planned it, but I’m also not saying it didn’t. 🌙

I love photographing grown-up families. Mom and Dad, their kids, and now the spouses and fiances who have officially become part of the fam. Everyone has their own schedule and their own life, so getting all six of them in one field at the same time is a small miracle all by itself. Then they snuggled in and laughed, and you can see it on every face here.

If you’ve been waiting for the perfect moment to get your grown up kiddos and their people together for photos, here’s your sign: there isn’t one. There’s only the next time everyone is in town. Partners and fiances belong in the frame, and the family you have right now is so worth photographing.

I’m a photographer, but I’m also... (watch the list get out of hand 🤪).

People sometimes think my job is clicking a button. Some days it is. The rest of the time I’m the stylist, the background maker, the weather forecaster, the hype girl, and the one who knows exactly when a toddler is done. (Also my own bookkeeper, but we don’t have to talk about that one.)

Here is the part I want you to know if you’re thinking about family photos: all of that is my job, not yours. You pick the day, I handle the planning, the weather, and the wrangling. You just show up and be yourselves.

I have two boys of my own, so I know the eye roll that happens the second someone says the word “photos.”

Being a boy mom, though, I have secret powers to make even toughest customers crack a smile... maybe even, gasp - a real laugh? Because the stiff, “I’m just trying to survive this” pose is never the one you’ll frame. It’s the four seconds after he thinks you’ve stopped. The laugh at something dumb. The hand going to the back of his head. The “okay fine, I’ll look at the camera” with just enough smirk.

The woman who has made me blonde all year tossed her tarot deck at my camera, and I have never been so happy to get hit with a card, because these photos are ✨magical✨

This is Jordan. She’s my hair colorist, and she’s also a brand new Certified Spiritual Director, which means she spends her days helping people get honest about who they are. So when she told me she wanted her branding photos to feel earthy, a little mystical, and authentically weird, I said yes before she finished the sentence.

These are a few frames from her session, and I’m still editing the rest. I couldn’t sit on these any longer, because they’re exactly what branding photos should feel like. Not stiff. Not one headshot in front of a gray wall. Just you doing the thing you do, with a little movement and a lot of personality.

The drive to family photos matters more than the outfits. I'm serious.

If everyone arrives hearing "stop that," "sit up," and "smile for the camera," the pictures look exactly like that, and likely, you're all stressed. If everyone arrives hearing "you get to be a goofball today," you get your real family, just as they are - not some made up, pretend version.

To the mom with a teenager who says “I hate pictures of myself”: I see you. I also promise it can be different.

I’ve photographed her mom for years, and I wanted this to feel nothing like a school picture day. No stiff poses, no “say cheese,” and no one telling her how she’s supposed to look. A field of wildflowers, a flowy dress, and it’s all about her.

That’s how you get a photo where she looks like herself. Calm, grown up (how did that happen so fast?!), and every bit her.

I’ve photographed Mallory & Austin since their engagement, then their wedding, and then family sessions ever since it was just the three of them (Mallory, Austin, and Chief the furbaby). I’ve also done branding sessions for Mallory. Now there are two human kiddos in the frame too, and Chief is still very much part of the crew for their yearly photos. ❤️

This one was a downtown KC mini at Liberty Memorial. Here is what I want every family to know: you do not need a dog who sits or kids who stand still. Chief roamed, the toddlers wiggled, and those are the photos they’ll keep and love! Bring the whole chaotic crew, the dog included! 🐶

Baby Leila turned one, and her big brother Ari made sure everyone knew it.

I’ve photographed this family for years. I shot Ari’s first year, maternity sessions for both of his moms, and now Leila’s one year photos at the end of her first year package in the studio. Ari has the best faces of any kid I know, and you can see him cracking up in these.

If you’re photographing siblings, give the big kid a job. Instead of “everybody smile,” try “make the baby laugh.” Ari took that assignment very seriously, and those are the frames you’ll keep.
