Hello good people of Earth!

We are entering Fair Season! Some fairs come earlier than others! Check your fair for entry dates for exhibits as some have deadlines months in advance!

Oregon residents: certain departments are now open for digital entries for the first phase of judging (closed to public), such as Fine Arts: Photography, Fine Art, and Calligraphy. This department closes July 20th, 2026.

Other departments may or may not have updated their landing page for 2026 yet, but the 2025 info should give you a rough timeline for this year.

I haven’t gotten out much photo wise so not sure if I’ll have much in the way of entries this year.

But you should all get out there!

Normally I am a photography person.
But recently I have been painting!

An interesting factor to painting is learning about colors….and pigments! Just because one brand calls a certain blue Indigo doesn’t mean it will look the same with another brand! I learned recently that most major watercolor brands do not use natural or synthetic Indigo to make their paint color called Indigo! The only one I have found is Maimeri out of Italy that uses Natural Indigo for their Indigo…and in a weird twist of fate uses synthetic Indigo for Payne’s Grey.
I didn’t have access to Maimeri’s blu line at the time so got M Graham’s Indigo blend (top paint in photo).
But let’s talk blue. This has been one of the hardest pigments to produce. The oldest blue pigment is Lapiz Lazuli, you may know it by its synthetic name: Ultramarine!

Pretty much every line has multiple variations of ultramarine (PB29 usually). But very few use the natural pigment. When those brands use the natural pigment they call the blue Lapiz Lazuli.
Daniel Smith and Michael Harding are two brands I found who use it in their watercolors. I had heard great things about Daniel Smith as a watercolor paint brand. They are kind of a big deal. And I had only heard of Michael Harding recently because of the rabbit hole I got down on watching a video on the production of Lapiz Lazuli pigment! Naturally I went initially with Daniel Smith! But you know what?! I was so disappointed! It was so dull. No matter how paint heavy I tried to make my paint, it was dull and bland and washed out as if it just plain lacked pigment.
So I bit the bullet and ordered Lapiz Lazuli from Michael Harding.
In the photo, the paint on the left is Daniel Smith. The paint on the right is Michael Harding.
Left is a TON of paint and less water.
Right is a lot more water.
When I paint with the Daniel Smith one, it just is a really drab color almost like a watered down indigo….to the point the first time I used it I thought I accidentally used my Indigo!
Interestingly…even though both brands use natural Lapiz Lazuli to create their paint, Daniel Smith gets theirs from South America. Michael Harding gets theirs from Afghanistan.

Vince and Christine are parents to a friend (Valerie) I have known for 35 years. We went to school together, were on the same soccer team for many years as kids.

They were always the loud and cheerful supporters of everyone!

If you are able to help out, it would be appreciated! If you can’t spare some change (I know times are rough!), please spread the word.

If you've ever met Vince then chances are good that he's brought laughter… Valerie Newcomb needs your support for Support Vince's Recovery After Heart Surgery
