Someone told me they didn’t want a birth plan because birth plan’s “fail” when things change.

But a birth plan’s job was never to make birth go according to plan.

You can’t control exactly how labor will unfold.

You *can* spend sometime before labor thinking through what matters to you, learning about the decision you may be asked to make, and talking through your preferences with your partner and provider.

Then, if something changes, you’re not encountering all of those decisions for the first time while you’re exhausted, overwhelmed, or in the middle of contractions.

That’s the real value of making a birth plan.

The plan itself is useful. But the preparation that happens while you’re making it is even more important.

Apparently it’s World Photography Day, which feels like a pretty good time to share some of my favorite images that I’ve taken over the years.

The first image is from the first birth I ever photographed.  It’s nearly impossible to pick favorites because I always have at least one from every session or birth that I just adore.  I can’t share them all and I don’t have permission to share some, but here’s a handful of some of the ones I love love love.  And now I want to see yours!  If I’ve ever photographed you, show me your favorite photo I’ve taken for you in the comments—or share it to your stories and tag me so I can see it. 😊

What I AM gonna do is be there so you don’t have to figure this all out by yourself.

So you have someone to text when you leave an appointment with more questions than you walked in with.

Someone to help you understand your options when the plan changes.

Someone to remind you that changing your mind isn’t failing.

Someone who knows when to step in with a position change, a hip squeeze, a cold washcloth… or when to step back and let you and your partner have the moment.

And yes, someone quietly documenting the parts of the day you might otherwise never get to see.

Because birth support isn’t about creating one particular kind of birth.

It’s about making sure that whatever happens, you feel supported, informed, cared for, and like you were an active participant in your own birth.

If this is the kind of support you want, maybe I’m your doula.

Sometimes it starts with little comments that don’t seem like a big deal:

“Baby is measuring a little ahead. We may have to induce.”
“Your BP was borderline today. We may have to induce.”
“You’re 37. We’ll probably want to induce around 39 weeks.”
“We don’t really like people going past 40 weeks.”

It can start to feel like that’s where your pregnancy is inevitably headed.

And that’s why I want you to get curious when these conversations start.

Is this an actual concern right now, or something we’re watching for? What would need to change for you to recommend induction? Is there anything we can do now to monitor or address this?

And here’s what I really want you to remember:

Just because an idea has been mentioned throughout your pregnancy doesn’t mean it’s inevitable.

Hearing “we may need to induce” enough times can make induction start to feel like the natural next step—even if the circumstances that were supposed to make it necessary never actually happened.

And something feeling expected isn’t the same thing as it being necessary.

If induction is eventually recommended, look at that decision with fresh eyes.

What is happening in your pregnancy right now? Why is induction being recommended right now? What are your options right now?

Being prepared for the possibility of an induction is not the same thing as agreeing to one in advance.

Birth is just the beginning of the story.

Anything you can take off your postpartum mental load before your baby arrives is a gift to your future self.

The newborn days are a blur. You’re healing, adjusting, and falling in love with a brand-new little person.

Believe it or not, this wasn’t the first or the last time I got completely reamed for having the audacity to tell another woman she was allowed to say no.

I’ve just never been one to do something just because someone else wanted me to, and I don’t think anyone else should have to either. 🤷🏻‍♀️

In the great words of Eric Cartman… “I do what I want!”
