About what birth actually looks like, not only the ideal version.
About your options, what different situations could look like, and how they might be handled.
About the questions you want to ask and how to put them into words.

If I know the answer, I tell you. If I don't, I help you find it.

But it isn't magic.

Confidence comes from making the unfamiliar less unfamiliar.

You think through the possibilities, understand where you may have choices, and begin to trust that you can handle the decisions as they come.

It’s not because everything is guaranteed to go according to plan.

But because you aren't walking in blind.

That is the work behind the words in these slides.

And sometimes it looks like braiding your hair in the hospital bathroom.

Sometimes a birth is loud and triumphant, and sometimes it is hallowed and quiet.

We love to romanticize the moment a baby is born.

Birth photographers call this the “I did it” moment and we *covet* getting that emotional shot.

But sometimes I look at a mom, smile and say, “You did it!”... and what I get back is a blank stare.

Not because she isn’t happy, but because sometimes the very first thing you feel after birth is just... shock.

Or exhaustion.

Or you’re so overwhelmed by everything you just went through that your brain can’t even catch up.

And if that happens to you after your baby is born, I just want you to know… it’s completely normal.

Birth is one of the hardest things you’ll ever do.

And sometimes you don’t feel powerful. Sometimes you just feel like you survived it.

Someone told me they had no birth plan except to have a safe, healthy baby, and I definitely have thoughts.

Of course that’s what we all want. But how are you preparing for the decisions and the actual work of getting there?

Making a birth plan means learning about your options. Asking questions before you’re having contractions. Thinking about how you want to cope, what support you’ll need, and what matters to you.

Does that mean everything will go exactly the way you want? No.

But you’ve talked with your partner about how to support you. Practiced something you can try when contractions get intense. Had conversations with your provider about your preferences—and learned how they respond.

And if something changes, you have somewhere to start with your questions.

The preparation behind that piece of paper matters.

You don’t need an opinion about every little thing. But you deserve the chance to discover that you have one.

“Work your doula magic!”

That’s what a nurse said to me as we watched a mom’s contractions on the monitor.

I made a witchcraft joke, of course. 🧙🏻‍♀️ But then I thought,

“Oh my God, do I have any magic?”

Every doula has her little bag of tricks and greatest hits. But sometimes what usually works just doesn’t, and birth needs you to pivot.

Sometimes I think the real magic is in women bearing witness to another woman’s strength and pain.

Having a doula doesn’t guarantee a specific outcome, but it is a promise that you won’t be doing it alone.

(I have seen some doulas and midwives work some real magic, though. 🧂🍃🌱🫶)
