One day, I was coming home from the hospital with this tiny little baby, knowing absolutely nothing about how to be a mom.

And the next thing I know, we’re taking senior pictures, applying for scholarships, and sending her off for the summer to work before she starts college.

Older moms try to warn you not to wish the days away.

But there’s really no way to prepare someone for the emotional whiplash that is motherhood.

Somehow, time passes both painfully slow and painfully fast.

This never gets old.

I was at a birth for 18 hours yesterday. I was awake for nearly 36.

Getting to watch a baby come into the world, hearing a mom say “This is the best day of my life” when she’s finally holding her baby for the first time…

Every second is worth it.

You can’t control every part of birth. But there’s a huge difference between birth taking an unexpected turn and feeling completely unprepared for what’s happening to you.

I hear the same things over and over in conversations after birth:

“I wish I’d known that *before* I had my baby.”
“No one explained what was happening.”
“I wish I’d known I had other options.

“I wish I’d trusted myself more.”

Preparing for birth is more than:
• a cute birth plan template
• hoping for the best
• memorizing the stages of labor

It’s understanding your options.
Knowing how to ask questions.
Preparing your partner.
Learning how hospital birth actually works.
Walking in informed instead of intimidated.

You deserve that.

It feels like you’ll be pregnant forever, but the truth is it’s over before you know it and you’re wondering where the time has gone.

The photos are worth it.

I think one of the biggest reasons so many women walk away from birth feeling powerless is because they didn’t know their options and they felt like decisions were made for them instead of by them.

A lot of “standard” hospital procedures are presented like they’re automatic and unquestionable. Just “this is what we do.”

But informed consent means you have the right to understand:
• why something is being recommended
• the benefits and risks
• possible alternatives
• whether it’s urgent
• and what happens if you wait

Birth is not one-size-fits-all.

It’s really hard to process information and advocate for yourself in the middle of labor if you’ve never been exposed to these conversations before.

Preparation matters.

You can’t control every aspect of birth, but understanding your options changes how you move through it.

Birth is about so much more than the moment your baby arrives.

It’s the way you gather your strength. It’s the people holding you through the hardest parts. It’s the quiet moments in-between. And the way everything changes at once.

It’s all these little moments that you can’t even really imagine, but to see them on the other side is magic. And they become part of the story you tell about the day you became a mother.

This is why birth photography is so special to me. All these moments deserve to be remembered.
