10 photographs I will never take again.

Not because I don’t want to.

Because I can’t.

The light was different.
The weather was different.
The moment was different.
And in some cases, the landscape itself has changed.

That’s one of the things I love most about photography. We aren't just capturing what a place looks like. We’re preserving a moment in time that may never exist in quite the same way again.

These are 10 photographs I’m especially grateful I stopped long enough to make.

Sometimes you arrive somewhere and everything looks right.

Beautiful place. Beautiful landscape. Camera in your hands.

But something is missing.

I've learned that I don't have to force the photograph.

Sometimes the most important decision is to put the camera away and walk on.

That's what this week's Through My Viewfinder is about.

Same photograph. Two very different feelings.

One in color. One in black and white.

Timeless Tranquility brings out the subtle colors of the landscape, while Standing Alone strips everything back to light, shadow, texture, and form.

The long exposure gives the clouds that sweeping movement, but the mood changes completely depending on how you see it.

So I'm curious...

The scene didn't look like much at first.

Just a quiet stream, some greenery, and a patch of purple flowers.

But I stopped.

I noticed the color against the green.

Then I noticed the reflection.

And suddenly, the photograph was there.

That's one of the things I love about photography.

You don't always have to find a spectacular place.

Sometimes you just have to look a little closer.

Some moments aren't meant to be rushed.
This was one of them.

The sun was just beginning to rise, the water was almost perfectly still, and for a little while, it felt like there were two suns.

One above me.

One reflected below.

Nothing needed to happen.

I didn't need to hurry to the next location.

I just needed to be there long enough to notice it.

Maybe that's one of the things photography has taught me best.

Not every moment needs to become something.

Some moments are simply meant to be experienced.

Slow down. Look around. You might be surprised by what you've been rushing past.

There are places that make you stop.

Not because you planned to.

Not because you expected to.

You simply arrive, look around, and realize...
this is worth remembering.

Sometimes it's the grand landscape.

Sometimes it's something as simple as a windmill standing quietly against the evening sky.

This was one of those moments.

The world seemed to slow down for just a little while, and I found myself simply taking it in.

I came looking for the Castles on Ohio Pass.

That was the plan.

What I didn't expect was to find them wrapped in clouds.

From where I was standing, the scene looked completely different from what my eye could capture. So I reached for the telephoto lens and started looking closer.

The mountains, the clouds, the distant landscape...

Everything came together in a way I hadn't planned.

And that's one of the things I love about photography.

You can plan the destination.

You can plan the timing.

You can plan the photograph.

But you can't always plan what nature is going to give you.

Sometimes, it gives you something better.

Sometimes the best part of a photography trip happens before I ever take a photograph.

I arrive before sunrise, park the truck, turn off the engine, and simply sit in the darkness.

No notifications. No deadlines. No pressure to come home with "the shot."

Just me, the landscape, and the anticipation of watching another day begin.

Over the years, I've learned those quiet minutes aren't wasted time. They're part of why I go.

Sometimes the light comes together and I make a photograph I'll treasure.

Sometimes it doesn't.

Either way, I was there.

Two beautiful moments.

Two very different ways to start or end a day.

If you could choose one view to experience tomorrow, which would it be?
🏔️ A: Mountain Serenade A Colorado sunset, with the Rockies catching the last golden light of the day.
🌊 B: Sunrise Reflections A quiet beach at sunrise, with the first light stretching across the water.

There's something about both that makes me want to stop, breathe, and stay a little longer.

Every photograph has a story.

Sometimes it's about the light.

Sometimes it's about the weather.

Sometimes it's about the road that got you there.

And sometimes it's about the things that happened that you never could have planned.

A photograph captures one moment.

But it doesn't capture the waiting, the wandering, the wrong turns, the weather, the muddy shoes, the quiet conversations, or the decisions that happened before the shutter clicked.

Those are the stories I love almost as much as the photographs themselves.

So I'm curious...
