This week has been rough. Watching the destruction unfolding in Bid Bend has been heartbreaking and made it hard to think about much else.
A comment that keeps coming up from strangers on Facebook on my reel about the destruction of Big Bend is that I’m just some woke liberal who doesn’t know how dangerous it is down there and am complaining because it’s the cool thing to do. I have been fortunate to spend enough time in the area that a friend from high school asked if I lived there. I’m mad and heartbroken to see this unnecessary destruction in an area I care deeply about.
This area is not a dangerous border crossing hotspot. The Big Bend sector accounts for more than a quarter of the entire border - 517 miles - and 1.3% of all immigration apprehensions annually. Within Big Bend National Park where the bulldozing is currently happening only .045% of all apprehensions occur annually. Nature has provided a wall. The destruction of pristine wilderness & wildlife habitat in this area is happening despite opposition from CBP officials in the area and local law enforcement agencies as well as local businesses and landowners.
Our normal campground in the area sits across the road from the Rio Grande & looks over vast, uninhabited, mountainous desert on the other side of the border, which is the norm in every direction once you leave the Terlingua area. When we first visited in 2021, I couldn’t wrap my mind around the vastness.
