It was an honor to photograph this United States Navy Change of Command and Retirement Ceremony at Naval Base Point Loma in San Diego as a submarine officer concluded an extraordinary 30-year career of service.

Military ceremonies are about so much more than rank. They’re about the family who sacrificed alongside every deployment, every underway period, every missed holiday, and every homecoming. Watching decades of leadership, commitment, and sacrifice recognized in front of shipmates, friends, and family is something I’ll never take for granted.

The passing warship in the background felt like the perfect reminder that while one chapter ends, the mission continues.

A Change of Command ceremony is more than a military tradition—it’s the passing of responsibility, leadership, and trust from one commanding officer to the next.

It was an honor to document this submarine Change of Command aboard USS Santa Fe at Naval Base San Diego, capturing both the formal ceremony and the family moments that make these milestones so meaningful.

From the arrival of the colors and sideboys to the final family portraits on the waterfront, every detail reflects years of service, sacrifice, and dedication to the mission.

One of my favorite parts of photographing military ceremonies is preserving the moments that happen beyond the official script—the proud smiles, the hugs from family, and the realization that a major chapter has come to a close while another begins.

Congratulations to the outgoing Commanding Officer and best wishes to the incoming leadership team.

This incredible Navy career was honored on the deck of the USS Midway in San Diego, surrounded by family, fellow service members, and the weight of everything that came before this moment.
