The coast of Dalmatia is forested with pine trees. These were at one time harvested by the Republic of Venice to serve as pilings on which the city of Venice would be built. Pokrivenik is an inlet on the Island of Hvar on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. This particular place is where my cousin and his wife live. In the past people made their living from the land cultivating grapes, lavender, almonds, and olives. The vineyards and fields go largely untended. People now make their living on tourism. When I came to Salina in 1989 hardly anyone had visited Croatia. Since then, many people I know from Salina have visited there.

Samobor is small town outside of Zagreb, Croatia. Its architecture is of Austro-Hungarian influence. It is a charming place that once had a medieval fort on one of the hills surrounding the city. The restaurant is legendary for its cremeschnitte. This luscious custard creme cake is popular in Central Europe, but it is a big deal in Croatia and Slovenia.
