I will be stepping away from the computer for a while, so I'll be sharing photos from various trips. Brooklyn, New York, was a pleasant surprise. In the past, my visits were limited to Manhattan for medical conferences and work events. Manhattan feels noisy, dominated by overwhelming architecture, and lacks a sense of community. Brooklyn is the opposite. While it has tall buildings, it also offers neighborhood businesses, green spaces, and a vibrant street life filled with residents who call it home.

Despite my best efforts, no pot of gold was found. Cliché as it may be, who can resist a rainbow? When I lived in Salina, reaching the landscapes I loved to photograph was a short trip. The open countryside, with its vast sky and unobstructed horizon, deeply resonated with me. The landscape in Kansas City feels different, which perhaps explains my recent interest in photographing birds. Below is one of the photographs from a few years ago that I had set aside, for reasons unknown, but now have the time to revisit.

In the leisure of retirement, I have been sifting through old image folders and revisiting files I previously set aside. The "B" team is getting another look. During my working years, image processing was a late-night task, reserved for after the day's main work was done. Often, it was late, I was fatigued, yet I would stay up into the early morning hours to finish. Doing this work now is a true treat. It is the middle of the day, and fatigue is no longer a problem. My goal was to capture a moody sunset from Coronado Heights, as the light faded and darkness settled.

Who can resist a sunset at Coronado Heights? I often find several cars parked there, sometimes with couples or family groups. Most people leave just after the sun dips below the horizon. The best light, when the sun illuminates the undersides of the clouds, occurs just a few minutes later.

This pastoral scene captures central Kansas during the early summer wheat harvest. With the pond brimming and the grasses lush and green, drought has yet to take hold in Saline County. It is common that in this time of year the grasses have turned brown.

The dickcissel is one of my favorite songbirds, commonly found in rural areas. This photo was taken at Baker Wetlands in Douglas County, just south of Lawrence, Kansas. The bird was near the walking trail, allowing me to get within fifteen feet while using a long telephoto lens.

This Memorial Day observance at Salemsborg Lutheran Church in rural Saline County is truly striking. It might catch you by surprise if you are driving down Burma Road without expecting it. Flags are brought to honor the veterans buried in the cemetery, creating a sight to behold.
