I love Black-crowned Night Herons. I don't see many in my area, so whenever I visit a place where they're more numerous, I make a point of spending time watching them. They're such fascinating birds—usually calm and patient, with a quiet elegance that's easy to miss if you don't stop and look.

This particular heron was showing off all of its beautiful feathers, and it was a real treat to watch.

It was a hot summer day on the prairie at Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge. A northern harrier glided low over the fields, wings held in a shallow V, quietly hunting above the grasses. So lovely to watch, despite the heat and the relentless deer flies.

While camping at Crow Wing State Park, I was sitting quietly at the boat launch, enjoying a peaceful start to the day, when something incredible happened—a bear swam right across the water in front of me!

I had seen my very first bear crossing the path in front of the car as I drove from the campsite to the boat launch but couldn't get a photo. I was excited to see that one but to see another - WOW!

I love those quiet summer days when the wind is so calm that the water becomes a perfect mirror, reflecting every cloud overhead. This early, there are few people on the beach and it's so very peaceful.
