Why do senior photos matter?

They’re about celebrating all the years that got them here- and parents too! One day, you’ll realize it wasn’t just about senior year.
It was the rides to practice.
The late-night homework sessions.
The games.
The forgotten lunches.
The endless piles of laundry.
The way they yelled “Mom!” from the other room.

Senior year isn’t just a celebration of who they’ve become.
It’s a reflection of the love, sacrifices, and years that helped them get there.
That’s why I believe senior photos matter. Not because of the photos themselves. But because sometimes we all need a reason to pause long enough to celebrate how far we’ve come.

Let’s be honest, guys deserve cool senior photos as well- and so does momma! It’s really way more fun than they think it will be (I hear it after every session) and the end result is so worth it!

🛑 One of the biggest misconceptions about senior photos- That you have to show up feeling confident and know exactly what to do.

Most seniors don’t.
They’re worried they’ll look awkward. They’re convinced they don’t know how to pose. They’re focusing on every little thing they wish they could change.

And honestly? That’s completely normal. What I’ve learned after photographing hundreds of seniors is that confidence rarely walks into the session with them, but it always shows up later.

It happens when they realize they don’t have to know what to do. When they stop worrying about the camera. When they start laughing, relaxing, and simply being themselves.

By the end of the session, something shifts.
They stand a little taller. They smile a little easier. And for the first time in a long time, they see themselves the way everyone else already does.

That’s one of my favorite parts of this job. 🤍

❌4 things not to wear for senior photos in St. Augustine (or anywhere) and what you should do instead

1️⃣ tight fitting/ short dresses
❌ While super cute in person, they don’t photograph well because you can’t move much in them and they don’t always photograph well from every angle. It also doesn’t allow for a lot of variety in posing and you feel like you’re constantly pulling them as you’re moving around.
✅ opt instead for flowy pieces, ones that allow you to sit (comfortably) and move around naturally.

2️⃣super busy and LOUD patterns
❌ why wear something that distracts from you? Loud patterns tend to overwhelm the body, and can look crazy on camera- so it’s better to add a quiet pattern..
✅ Think stripe, a floral, something that speaks instead of screams. The colors can be bold if the pattern is more muted.

3️⃣ wearing the same style over and over
❌ don’t wear the same item in multiple colors. Like the same tank style flowy dress in pink, then blue then black
✅ instead add variety. A jeans look, a shorter flowy dress, and then a long one. If you love a set clothing item, change it up. Maybe add a sweater, or one that’s short sleeves and one that sleeveless.

4️⃣ wild undergarments
❌ stay away from crazy colors UNDERNEATH your outfits. Trust me, those blue un**es are visible through your fave linen pants.
✅ instead always go neutral, it’s the best way to make sure the lines etc are hidden.

This is the #1 Question I get, and that I see in parent and senior forums. 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

So how does it work? For most schools in the Jacksonville and St. Augustine area, there is a contracted photographer who HAS TO take the yearbook photo in order for the senior to be in the yearbook. My advice is do this early, in case you hate it, and want a retake and because then it’s off the “to do” list. They do book up fast, especially in summer. For most schools this is the classic Drape/ Tux photo. Many will also take a cap and gown photo at that time... but you probably won’t see it till spring of your graduating year.

This is ALL the photos you have to do with them. If you plan to do photos elsewhere, then I always advise to do the minimal session fee, and check your proof for these two things, and decide what to order later, if applicable. This should be a very minimal fee. I advise all of my clients, friends and followers to think outside the box for senior photos- whatever that means to YOU! These studios are mass production, and their job is to service thousands of students. This is not about a custom experience, but a one size fits all for the students and the schools. From experience, it was emotional and overwhelming, but worth tagging along to experience it with your senior! (So seniors, grab mom or dad)! 😍
