I think we as photographers and even our clients sometimes forget something really important:
Photography is still art.
We talk so much about “style.” Light and airy, dark and moody, true to color, cinematic…the list goes on and on. But the reality is, while the way we edit may lean one direction or another, the light affects the final image just as much, if not more.
How we see the light, how we take it in, how we adjust to it…all of that changes what the image becomes.
I’d consider my own work fairly true to color, but the longer I’m in this industry, the more I realize sometimes the image tells you what it wants to be.
It’s okay to have a direction with your work. We all do. But don’t be afraid to let that sun really shine. Let those shadows get a little moodier than you normally would. Let the moment dictate the image instead of trying to force every image into the exact same box.
It’s art.
