Lately, I’ve noticed a growing issue that directly affects small, local businesses like mine. Several of my customers have shared that after being involved in an accident, responding tow truck drivers or police officers have insisted their vehicle must be taken to a specific repair shop. Even when customers requested that their vehicle be towed to my shop, Andy’s Collision, those requests were denied.

I want to make it clear that you have the legal right to choose where your vehicle is towed and repaired. No officer or towing company can require you to take your vehicle to a specific business. Unfortunately, some repair shops offer incentives or “kickbacks” to towing companies or individuals who direct vehicles to their facilities. Not only is this practice unethical, it is also illegal, and it unfairly harms honest, community-based businesses that rely on customer trust and choice.

If you’re ever in an accident, remember:
• You can have your vehicle towed to any licensed repair facility you choose.
• You are not obligated to follow a recommendation from a tow operator or officer.
• Always state clearly where you want your vehicle to go, and don’t be afraid to stand firm.

Supporting local, independent repair shops helps keep your money in the community and ensures you receive personalized, trustworthy service—not a referral made for someone else’s profit.
