Lately, I’ve been leaning more and more into documentary photography.
…. I think I’m starting to understand why.
At conferences and events, it’s easy to focus on the obvious photographs; the speaker on stage, the handshake, the group photo, the applause etc
These moments matter. But I’m finding myself increasingly drawn to everything happening between those moments.
The unexpected discreet laugh between friends, conversations happening in the hallways, hand on someone’s shoulder etc..
I’m learning that human connection is often communicated without words. It’s found in posture, gestures, eye contact, proximity, and those tiny expressions that disappear almost as quickly as they appear.
And this is the genesis of my new found love that is; Documentary photography.
I have ceased to manufacture the moment.
I want to notice it.
To slow down enough to anticipate what might happen next and wait for that brief moment when the emotion, gesture, people, and environment all come together.
I’m also learning that not every photograph needs to be polished.
Real experiences manifest in all expressions. Awkward moments, quiet moments, tired moments and perhaps, uncertain moments.
They have laughter, solitude, anticipation, and everything in between.
Maybe those are the photographs that ultimately tell the story best.
In focus: Candid moments documented at the last The I Am Africa Experience experience.
