I have thought long and hard about this post and the events leading up to this photo session; the 1500 beagles that were saved from Ridglan farms in WI after years of advocacy and protests and the lucky eight that made their way to Against All Oddz Animal Alliance Inc. I've lost sleep knowing that there are 60,000 more animals right up the street in North Rose, NY being bred every day for scientific research just like these eight beautiful pups. Meeting these dogs was a game changer for me. Seeing how curious they were about life outside of a windowless, wire caged laboratory where the lights were always on and sleeping standing up was their normal made me simultaneously sick to stomach and so grateful for animal advocates. Photographing their beautiful faces but catching glimpses of their tattoo'd ears, missing pieces and clear signs of neglect and abuse was a lot to take in. I left their photo session thinking, wow do we take our surroundings for granted or what? The grass, sunshine, wind, bugs, rain, snow, the smell of fresh cut grass, couches, soft blankets, safe stable shelter, human touch meant to comfort and show positive affection- ALL of this was new to them and so much more. Seeing their unsure expression when the wind hit their big floppy years, their interest in flying insects, the instinctual curiosity of running, playing and grooming their fellow canine friends; it was a day that I will take to my grave. The majority of these pups ranging in age of 1-13 years have found furever homes. Some of these beagles are still waiting but they are in great hands; safe and loving and will never have to endure the pain and suffering that they did at that hell hole again.
I'd like to invite you to stand up and peacefully protest with us in two weeks at the Free the Dogs Rally (plus ferrets, cats and pigs) on June 26 and 27th. https://facebook.com/events/s/free-the-dogs-rally-at-marshal/1479899746772421/ Change does not happen overnight but Ridglan Farms is a prime example of the power of advocacy and if anyone can do it, we can. Upstate NY is fierce, animal advocates are fierce and we will make a difference for those still waiting to be saved.
These animals deserve more and we can help. These eight beagles are real living proof. Please share ๐๐ผ
