Streetscapes Around Racine

Directions Website

Streetscapes Around Racine architecture & landscape around Racine, Wisconsin. photos by Ruby Elena. For years I've been snapping photos of buildings, landscape and sunsets.

I photograph buildings and try to dig up some history, like the architect and the year built. I love stumbling on street art, vintage signs and interesting architecture. For prints or commercial licensing, send me a message.

Usonian, atomic ranch and mid-century modern

homes and buildings around West Racine and Manree Park, from the late 40s into the early 60s

Usonian homes were to be designed with car ports, no garages. Frank Lloyd Wright called garages clutter catchers. However architects like McDonald and Tafel frequently broken this rule by integrating the garage because it was what the client wanted. Usonian homes were private in the front, usually with clerestory windows, the narrow band along roofline. Single story offices used clerestory windows too, but Usonian was strictly residential. The atomic ranch, on the other hand, had large picture windows in front. The roof was either low-pitched or flat, usually slanted.

Originally I set out to make one Usonian post. Finding overlap in these horizontal styles, I decided to combine them and group by area. Stay tuned for more of these.
