Halloween

Sometimes a little disguise makes room for a lot of personality.

You can try being dramatic, strange, or completely over the top without feeling like you have to explain what it says about you. It's a character. It's an idea. You can explore it and go back to your regular clothes tomorrow.

That possibility is what I like about a ghostly portrait like this. Not being immediately recognizable changes the conversation. Instead of worrying whether everyone will think, “That's so you,” you can get curious about what you want to express for a moment.

It doesn't have to uncover something profound. It can simply be fun to step outside the version of yourself people expect.

What would you choose for one portrait: an eerie silhouette, an extravagant villain, or something nobody would see coming?

Being capable doesn't tell anyone how much effort something takes you.

From the outside, it can look like you're handling everything just fine. And maybe you are handling it. That still doesn't mean you never want encouragement, attention, or a chance to let somebody else take care of the details.

I'd like there to be room for that whole person in your portraits. The steady part, yes. Also the part that laughs, gets quiet, or doesn't feel like proving anything that day.

You don't lose your strength because another side of you is visible. A serious portrait and a smiling one can both belong without either becoming the official version everyone expects you to maintain.

What side of yourself gets overlooked because people are so used to seeing you as capable?

You don't have to fully believe a compliment before you can stop arguing with it.

Maybe someone likes a portrait of you and your first thought is, “That's only because of the makeup.” Or the outfit. Or the angle. You can acknowledge those things without treating yourself as the one part of the image that contributed nothing.

There was a person there. You.

I don't want to pressure you into loving every photograph or agreeing with every kind thing someone says. I do think there's room between instant belief and instant dismissal. You can let another person's perspective sit there for a while.

The next time you're about to explain away something kind, try a simple “Thank you.” Notice whether the extra explanation is something you want to say, or something you've gotten used to saying.

You might be kinder to the person in an old photograph than you were when it was taken.

The image hasn't changed. Something about what you notice has. A detail that once felt enormous may matter less than the expression, the memory, or the person you recognize now.

That makes me wonder how many current moments we're judging by standards we won't care about nearly as much later.

You don't have to love every picture of yourself. But you can question the idea that your life only becomes worth documenting after you've reached a certain goal. There are things about this chapter that won't repeat exactly as they are.

Think about one photograph you're glad exists, even though you didn't like it at first. What do you see in it now that you missed then?

If someone asked you what you like about yourself, would your answer mostly describe what you do for other people?

Being caring, dependable, generous. Those are real qualities. But you also get to have a relationship with yourself that isn't measured by how much everyone else needs you.

That distinction matters to the experience I created. Before the photoshoot, the Personality Reveal gives us time to talk about you. What matters to you. What you want to recognize. Things that can get pushed aside when the conversation always starts with your responsibilities.

You don't have to come up with an impressive answer. “I haven't thought about that in a while” is an honest place to begin.

If you're curious about having that kind of space for yourself, send me a message. We can talk about what you'd want from it.

“I've just never been that kind of person.”

Sometimes that's a preference. Sometimes it's an old conclusion we haven't checked in a very long time.

You can keep calling yourself awkward or unphotogenic even after you've had moments that don't fit the description. The uncomfortable part is deciding what to do with those moments. Do they get a place in how you see yourself, or do you dismiss them as exceptions?

I don't expect a portrait to tell you what to believe. What interests me is giving you something real to consider alongside the story you already know so well.

You might look at yourself and feel unfamiliar with what you see. That doesn't automatically make it false.

What's an old description of yourself you've started to question? You can share it or simply take a moment to name it for yourself.

A favorite book and a T-shirt. That can be where we start.

I think people sometimes picture a portrait experience and immediately start making a list of everything they would have to change about themselves to fit into it.

But I want to know who you are before we start deciding what anything should look like. What do you love? What do you spend time doing when that time actually belongs to you?

That’s why I created the Personality Reveal as the first part of the experience. We have a conversation about you. The ideas grow from there.

You don’t need to make yourself more interesting before you reach out. Tell me something you’re already excited about, and let’s see where that takes us.

You’re allowed to want something a little different.

You don’t have to explain why it matches your personality perfectly or prove you’re confident enough to pull it off. You can just be curious.

That gives us somewhere to start.

During the Personality Reveal, we talk about what you’re drawn to and what you want from the experience. An idea can be unfinished. You can show me something and say, “I like this, but I don’t know what my version would look like.”

That’s a conversation I want to have. The point is to create something that feels personal to you.

Send me the idea you keep going back to and tell me what catches your attention. Let’s talk about it.

You don’t have to know how to do everything you see in a photograph.

I think that’s worth saying, because an image can make something look effortless and then you assume you would have to arrive already knowing how to make that happen.

You can start by asking what’s involved.

Maybe what you love is the movement. Maybe it’s the playfulness. Your own idea might take a completely different form, and we can talk about what would be suitable and what arrangements it needs.

There’s guidance in my portrait experience. You’re not expected to figure out the photoshoot by yourself.

So, tell me what you’re curious about. If you’ve been looking at an idea and wondering whether it could be for you, let’s have that conversation.

You can love the composed portrait and love the smile.

You don’t have to pick one and decide that’s the only version that counts as you.

That’s part of what I want to make room for in the experience. We talk during the Personality Reveal, work through a guided photoshoot, and then you see your portraits at your Private Exhibition.

So, you get to respond to actual photographs of yourself. You don’t have to decide ahead of time that you’ll only like the expression you always make when a camera comes out.

There might be something else you connect with. Let yourself see it first.

Take a look through this pair. Which kind of portrait would you be more curious to see of yourself?
