Our forest. Our ranches. Our homes. Our wildlife. Our ecosystem. The destruction is devastating at best. This assignment was earth shattering and eye opening. My family and I had to evacuate from this fire at the beginning of the month. We’re back home and safe. But some weren’t so fortunate. Trees are still smoldering. Wildland firefighters are working hard. This fire has been wreaking havoc for weeks on end. I’m so tired of hearing the phrase “this is unprecedented.”

The stark reality of Central Oregon right now. Too hot, too windy, too many storms, not enough rain. I stood in a burn scar from last year. Surrounded by smoke and the stillness of the mountains. Every little shift in the wind would cause an internal shudder. Within the blackness and the ash, there was life.

What farm to table looks like! I grew up raising, butchering, and eating. A self sustaining life on the farm. We’d have big meat bird butchering parties and whomever came to help got to leave with a bird. Back then it was a party. The kettle boiling over a stoked fire. Tables lined up and everyone ready at their stations. Tons of talks, laughs, and working together. Every year I raise Cornish hybrids for the freezer. I promise the bandanas were for the smoke and not to conceal our identities 😂 we’re all proud to be self sustaining!

The amount of planning and prep work that goes into a 20 minute show is wild! A huge shoutout to our wildland firefighters for keeping us as safe as possible!
