Small businesses are struggling. Not sure what the answer is...
It’s honestly heartbreaking what social media is doing to small businesses.
I’ve spent 17 YEARS building my photography business. Seventeen years of hard work, dedication, investments, and sacrifices.
I have spent years building a following of people who CHOSE to follow my business because they wanted to see my work.
Yet Facebook gets to decide who actually sees it.
Today, I offered a bo***ir shoot with NO session charge. Not one single person commented. Not one person asked about it. NOTHING.
I eventually deleted the post.
Think about that. I couldn’t even GIVE a photography session away!
And while I can’t know exactly how many people saw that offer, it makes me seriously question how many of my followers are actually seeing my posts.
Meanwhile, our feeds are filled with AI-generated videos of things that didn't happen, and content we never even asked to see.
REAL photographers. REAL artists. REAL small businesses. REAL families depending on that income.
We’re competing for visibility against content that an algorithm decides people should see instead to keep us entertained and scrolling.
This isn’t about wanting likes or attention.
THIS IS MY JOB. THIS IS MY LIVELIHOOD.
This is how I pay my bills. This is how I keep my studio doors open.
And the thought that a platform can have so much influence over whether a business survives, simply by controlling its visibility, is terrifying.
If someone takes the time to follow a business, why shouldn’t they be able to see what that business posts?
Small business owners shouldn’t have to beg to be seen by people who already chose to support them.
Seventeen years of building something shouldn’t be at the mercy of an algorithm.
And quite frankly, it’s not fair. 💔
