16 Years. 5,840+ Days. And somehow, I’m still just getting started!

They say, “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

If that’s true, then I guess I haven’t “worked” a single day for the past 16 years.

I don’t remember the exact date in August of 2010 when Shawn Black Photography officially became a business, so today seems as good a day as any to celebrate 16 YEARS of doing what I love.

When I started this journey in 2010, I was a complete unknown. There was no master plan, no roadmap, and certainly no guarantee that any of this would work.

What I did have was hustle, determination, and one very clear goal: I never wanted to work for someone else again.

Sixteen years later, I’m still here.
Still hustling.
Still creating.
Still learning.
Still pushing myself.
Still finding new ways to evolve as an artist and business owner.

And maybe most importantly, still excited when I pick up my camera.

What started as simply trying to build a photography business has turned into a career I never could have imagined back in 2010.

Photography has taken me around the world. It has put my work in front of people I never thought would see it. It has allowed me to represent and work alongside incredible companies like Geekoto, 17hats, Cheetah Stand, Fundy Software Inc, Evoto AI, Baby Dream backdrops, Aftershoot, and Bay Photo Lab.

It has led to my work being published in leading photography publications and given me opportunities to speak, teach, and educate at some of the biggest photography events in the world.

And that last part means more to me than I probably ever expected it would. Because somewhere along the way, this stopped being only about creating photographs. It became about giving back to the photography community that gave me the opportunity to build this life in the first place. Sharing what I’ve learned, helping other photographers grow, advocating for our industry, and hopefully leaving some sort of mark beyond the images themselves.

But none of these past 16 years happens without the people who have trusted and supported me.

To every client who has stepped in front of my camera, Thank You.

To the companies that have trusted me to represent their brands, Thank You.

To the photographers, educators, colleagues, and friends who have supported, challenged, inspired, and occasionally kicked me in the ass when I needed it, Thank You.

And to my family, who has lived this crazy photography life right alongside me, through the long days, late nights, travel, missed weekends, ridiculous ideas, successes, failures, and everything in between, Thank You.

You’ve all helped me turn something that started with nothing more than an idea and a whole lot of determination into something I’m incredibly proud of.

Sixteen years later, I still feel incredibly fortunate that photography isn't simply how I make a living.

It’s what I love to do.

So here’s to Year 17 and whatever comes next.

More clients, or as I’ve learned over the years, more new friends.
More images.
More travel.
More teaching.
More adventures.
More opportunities to push myself creatively.

And hopefully, many more years of never having to figure out what I want to be when I grow up.

Thank You for being part of these first 16 years. I can't wait to see where the next ones take me.

A few teasers from Lexi's senior portrait session at Lynch Park last Friday!

This session was especially meaningful to me because I’ve known Lexi since she was a baby. She’s the daughter of some of my oldest friends, so getting the chance to capture this milestone in her life was truly special. I can’t believe she’ll be starting her senior year in the fall!
