I have not been able to get out for almost a month. So I am going to post a few photos, some of which you may have never seen. This was in September of 2020 from the Rocky Mountain National Park. Pikas are always a treat to find and photograph.

Going back to 2-08-2022, I received a call from a good friend letting me know that the leucistic bald eagle was at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge. I was in a meeting at the time, but as soon as it ended, I headed that way. It was about an hour and a half drive.

Just as I got off the expressway near the refuge, I received a text saying it had already left. I was only about five minutes away. Since I was so close, I decided to hike one of my favorite trails anyway. As soon as I stepped out of the car, the eagle flew in and landed within 100 feet of us. Perfect timing.

This particular bird has been seen again this year, though we believe the one being reported in Missouri right now may actually be a different leucistic bald eagle.

I was hiking at the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve a few weeks ago when this doe stepped out from the trees. It was during golden hour—the hour just before sunset—and the light couldn’t have been more perfect. I love how she seems to glisten in the sunlight.

This was taken at Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge back when only a small number of snow geese had been reported. It’s impressive even then—but can you imagine what it looks like when there are over a million? They should be starting their journey back north very soon. This scene would make an amazing puzzle.

This short video says so much in such a brief moment. In one small patch of open water—surrounded by ice—you see large numbers of trumpeter swans and mallard ducks packed together, making the most of what little remains unfrozen. Eagles perch on the ice nearby, while a pair suddenly breaks into a mid-air duel overhead. So much life, drama, and motion happening in one tight space, all within just a few seconds.
