This photo just won First Prize in Adult/Moments division and Best of Show of all photos in The Six Fifty Peninsula Photo Contest. Woot! It'll be shown at the Palo Alto Art Center in September.

I've had several photography teachers tell me if you get one great photo in a year, that should make you happy. This was my best photo from 2025 and it does make me happy :) I was practicing a technique called "compose & wait" taught to me by . You have to be patient for this technique (not my strong suit). The front couple walked right into my photo oblivious to me and my camera and I was ready.

August 12 is World Elephant Day. Who knew? Seeing elephants in the wild was a deeply personal gift that I cherish. Who doesn't love a good matriarchal society?!

1. Elephants live in close family groups.
They form strong emotional bonds with other members of their herd. They’re strongly social animals and will rest for longer if another elephant is also resting nearby.

2. Elephants are individuals.
Each has their own individual personality. Their personality traits influence their social role within the herd and even how they try to solve problems.

3. Elephants are playful.
They love to play, and not just as youngsters. Fully-grown elephants throw water into the air, roll on the ground, and even chase other animals simply for fun.
