I read that Common Loons return to the same lake every Spring. I believe I photographed this same loon two years ago. I had never seen a loon so brown! This is from the tannins in the water. I’m guessing wherever it wintered caused the staining. When I saw this brownish loon again on the same lake, I was thrilled!

We had an opportunity to see Barn Owls in a cavity in a cliff wall. They were back kind of far and it was very hot. The combo did not make for great photo ops, but it was still fun to see. There were five owlets. We caught a possible glimpse of all five, but for sure saw three.

This Loon was panting in the heat on a hot July day (or for some reason just had its mouth open for a long time). As we got a closer look, we could see inside it’s mouth. SCARY! They have rearward-pointing sharp barbs on the roof of their mouths and tongues to grip the fish and move them down the hatch. Reminded me of a scary sea creature!
