I took a walk through D Ranch Preserve in search of bugs, but found NONE! 😤

Instead, I found arachnids, amphibians, and insects from several different orders… but not a single bug! 🤔

Yep, that’s right. Not one true bug was photographed!

While we commonly use the word “bug” to describe just about any small crawling or flying insect, true bugs belong to the order Hemiptera, which includes cicadas, stink bugs, shield bugs, and leaf-footed bugs!

While I found plenty of cool critters, technically my bug hunt was a BUST 😭 Still a fun time though!

This Green Horse Fly was such a beautiful color! 💚🐎🪰

It caught my eye instantly, especially with that bright green contrasting against the purple Liatris it was hanging out on. 💜

Glowworm survey night at Blue Spring State Park! 🌟🪱

I joined Ecology Ellie 🌱🏳️‍🌈♾ to search for firefly larvae: aka glowworms!

Despite their name, fireflies aren’t actually flies… they’re beetles! 🪲 They’re holometabolous, meaning they undergo complete metamorphosis: egg ➡️ larva ➡️ pupa ➡️ adult.

With larvae as our target, we searched through the leaf litter and debris beneath the trees where these ground-dwelling glowworms can be found. Once our eyes adjusted to the darkness, we started spotting their faint glow across the forest floor and began our survey! 🔦🌿

We saw HUNDREDS throughout the night (though I unfortunately didn’t get a good photo of them 😭), along with all kinds of other nocturnal critters 🕷️🐸

❣️Survey conducted as official Florida State Park volunteers ❣️

Visited an adorable American Japanese garden during my last visit to California - complete with resident peacocks 🦚🏯

The garden is split into four sections that each represent a odifferent season, and even features an incredible collection of over 100 bonsai 🌳

Played a little bit with the macro + flash combo tonight!

I still need to get a diffuser and id like to start playing with focus bracketing, but I’m so excited how these are coming out already! 🤩

National Park Visit #2 — Yosemite National Park 📍

As a Florida girl, the winding roads, towering mountain views, and waterfalls around every curve made my short visit feel absolutely magical. 🏔️🏞️
