This week's Public Safety Saturday is a little different than our traditional feature. Rather than highlighting one individual, we wanted to recognize a group of young people who represent the future of the fire service.
This past Friday, Tallman's Fireground Photography had the privilege of traveling to the Manlius Fire Department to spend the day at their annual Junior Firefighter Camp. After witnessing the dedication, enthusiasm, and teamwork displayed throughout the day, we felt it was only fitting to feature these campers and the incredible program that is helping shape the next generation of public safety professionals.
The week began with returning campers having the opportunity to earn leadership positions within the camp. Participants completed promotion examinations that tested the knowledge and skills they had developed during previous years. Those who successfully demonstrated their abilities were promoted into leadership roles, including Battalion Chief, Company Officer, Safety Officer, and EMS Officer. These positions carried real responsibility throughout the week, allowing campers to develop leadership, accountability, and confidence while mentoring their fellow campers.
Throughout the week, campers learned the fundamentals of the fire service while also gaining a greater appreciation for the many agencies that work together to keep our communities safe. The program brought together professionals from across the public safety spectrum, allowing campers to learn directly from members of the New York State Police, the Onondaga County 911 Center, the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office Air 1 Team, the 174th Air National Guard, the Town of Manlius Police Department, the Cazenovia Fire Department, and the Fayetteville Fire Department. The amount of planning, coordination, and volunteer effort required to provide this experience is truly remarkable, and it is evident that every instructor and participating agency is committed to investing in the next generation.
Our visit coincided with the camp's annual Water Fun Day, a tradition that celebrates a week of hard work with friendly competition, hands-on challenges, and plenty of laughter. The day began just as every other training day had throughout the week, with a morning briefing followed by physical training and a march around part of the village. Once the day's activities began, the training transformed into an exciting series of team-based competitions that reinforced the skills campers had spent the week developing.
Each station was designed to be both entertaining and educational. Campers competed in Pushball, participated in a handline relay that included pushing a boxed fire truck across the finish line, and tackled an obstacle course featuring several firematic challenges before finishing by striking a target with a fire hose to send one of the junior instructors into the dunk tank. Other stations included a "Hitting the Hydrant" challenge and a bucket brigade competition that encouraged campers to think creatively and work together to move water as efficiently as possible. It didn't take long before instructors became just as soaked as the campers, proving that no one was safe from getting drenched.
While the atmosphere was filled with laughter, excitement, and friendly competition, every activity carried an important lesson. Campers were constantly reinforcing the knowledge they had learned throughout the week while developing communication, leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork. They quickly learned that success in the fire service isn't achieved individually, it's built through trust, cooperation, and working together toward a common goal.
The week concluded with a graduation ceremony celebrating each camper's accomplishments and recognizing the skills they had developed. While the camp provides an outstanding introduction to the fire service, it also teaches lessons that extend far beyond emergency response. Leadership, discipline, respect, accountability, confidence, and teamwork are qualities these young campers will carry with them wherever life leads.
We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Chief VanDyke for inviting Tallman's Fireground Photography to document a portion of this incredible program, and to every instructor, advisor, volunteer, and participating agency for their warm hospitality throughout the day. Spending just one day at camp made it easy to understand why this program continues to grow and why so many campers return year after year. The dedication of everyone involved is creating an environment where young people are inspired to serve, challenge themselves, and build lifelong friendships.
Congratulations to every graduate of the 2026 Manlius Junior Firefighter Camp. Your hard work, determination, and commitment throughout the week should make you proud. The future of the fire service is bright, and after spending time with each of you, we have no doubt that it is in capable hands.
