September 30, 2026: Sylvan Grove, KS Tornado

After a year of frustrating attempts, I finally captured a photogenic tornado with my drone. Sirens wailing as it dances across the Kansas prairie.

20 years ago today I was in southeast South Dakota filming these.

September 16, 2006. Photogenic tornadoes near Salem and Colton. One tore through three farmsteads, took out outbuildings, farm equipment, a hog barn, and a semi on I-90. Killed at least five cattle. The Colton tornado shredded a workshop and outbuildings; the guy inside ran for the house just in time. House made it. Workshop didn’t.

Captured a beautiful supercell time-lapse, brief spin-ups, and some intense positive lightning that had chasers scrambling for cover. The drive home featured dramatic 360° spider lightning caught on my dash cams.
