There’s something funny that happens to women and birthdays.

When we’re little, getting older is the BEST thing that could possibly happen.

We announce the new number to anyone who will listen.

“I’M SIX AND A HALF.”

Then somewhere along the way, we’re taught to get quieter about it.

Don’t tell people your age.

Don’t make too big of a deal about your birthday.

Don’t dress like that anymore.

Don’t act like you’re still twenty.

And absolutely do not have the audacity to think getting older might actually be worth celebrating.

Nah.

I want the cake.

I want the ridiculous outfit.

I want the photos.

I want the evidence that says:

I was here. This is what I looked like. This is who I was becoming. And I thought she was worth remembering.

Because you are never going to be exactly this version of yourself again.

That doesn’t make today something to criticize.

It makes it something to document.
