Here’s the thing... Kids are going to be kids. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Family photos are not supposed to be perfectly posed, statue looking images. At least not in my opinion.

I’ve known this family for about 5ish years now. I met them when baby sis was born and we photographed her newborn session. What I love about them is that mom knows sessions are going to be chaotic and her kids are going to show their personalities in the session.

To think that we’re going to get the kids to sit and smile on demand for the whole session is just not realistic.

When we left, mom said I hope we got some good ones because admittedly the session did feel chaotic (probably more for the parents than for me). And as it turns out, mom ended up purchasing the whole gallery because she said she was so happy that I captured her children just how they are right now.

And I think that’s what is most important and what people often forget. Having your family perfectly posed in photos isn’t the reality of how your family is right now. We’ll get that image, and it’s fine if that’s your vibe, I’m not knocking it. I’m just saying to not feel bad or discredit these fun images too, because this is your children at their realest. This is them at their current age. And this is what makes them unique. This is what should be documented. These images don’t mean your session came out bad or your kids misbehaved. It meant your kids had a blast and were their true selves at our session. 🫶🏻

There is something so special about photographing a baby at four months old. They are starting to really show their little personalities, giving those sweet smiles, making adorable expressions, and becoming more curious about everything around them.

Mama, you survived the first year of motherhood…

There’s something about a baby turning one that feels almost impossible to put into words.

One minute, you’re bringing this tiny little person home, wondering how you could possibly love someone this much. And then somehow, almost overnight, you’re planning their first birthday and wondering where the entire year went.

A first birthday session isn’t just about capturing a one-year-old sitting in front of a camera. It’s about capturing a whole year of motherhood.

The sleepless nights. The first smiles. The first laughs. The little milestones. The moments when you wondered if you were doing it right. The cuddles that made everything worth it. The tiny hands that once fit perfectly inside yours and are now reaching, grabbing, exploring, and becoming their own little person.

There’s a bittersweet feeling that comes with a first birthday. You’re so excited to celebrate who your little one is becoming, but part of you wants to freeze time and go back to the days when they were tiny enough to fit against your chest.

That’s why these photographs matter.

Years from now, you may not remember exactly what your baby wore or how many times they smiled during their session.
But you’ll remember how it felt to be their mama during that very first year.

A first birthday session is more than a milestone.

It’s a celebration of your baby.

It’s a celebration of you.

And it’s a little reminder that while you may wish you could slow time down, you get to keep these moments forever in photographs. ❤️
