Taking my parents to NYC was so much more emotional than I thought it was going to be. Besides bunking in close quarters and wanting to kill each other at least 3 times a day, seeing New York through their eyes was like experiencing it for the first time again.
Being a child of immigrants, and getting to take them to the mecca of American culture was honestly cathartic. Instead of focusing on street photography, I was just watching them, watch my favorite city. I cried at the Statue of Liberty, my mom cried at John Lennon’s memorial, I showed them where he live and died just across the street. I marched them to the Upper West Side on foot all the way to Gray’s Papaya, my dad hated it of course, but at least he experienced a New York hot dog. I showed them Washington Square Park at 11pm, and accidentally walked them across the entire bridge into Brooklyn and had to walk back. We did so much more than that but my point is that I know it was not something they would have ever thought to do, and I’m immensely proud of myself for pushing them to do the trip. These are the kinds of experiences you carry with you.
