Mediocrity: The Difference Between Being Average and Settling for Less
Mediocrity is often treated as a failure of ambition: to be ordinary is supposedly to fall short. Yet this judgment confuses two different things—being average in comparison with others and choosing not to make a meaningful effort. An essay published by the Baku Research Institute draws this distinction explicitly, separating relative performance from the habit of settling for less. That distinction offers a fairer way to examine mediocrity. The real question is not whether everyone can be exceptional, but whether we approach the things that matter with care.
