This season was an odd one for me but filled with so many great memories.

Odd because I didn’t travel at all. Just stayed right here in Tennessee. Odd because we had an EARLY spring. Birds were ahead of their normal schedule making “late season” habits start much earlier. Odd because it barely rained. It was so dry the lake was at winter pool levels.

But man the oddities made the season that much more memorable. I got to share a first hunt with , didn’t get a bird but she got close to a gobbler!

My second gobbler did not gobble once, making it a tough hunt. Not to mention I didn’t have a shell in the 870 when he was at 15 yards…

Got close several times with good friends making some great memories none of us will forget.

20 frames isn’t enough, so here’s a glimpse into the good times had this April and May.

Well, looks like the coldest days of season are behind us. It’s 70 degrees in January, so naturally I’m reminiscing on the coldest day we had this season. Still hoping for a few more good hunts for Juno, but this has been her best season yet.

I was reminded the other day of a concept easily forgotten in my day to day grind. // HOPE //

Gloria and I were doing a little advent prayer the other day and reading scriptures about the hope that Christ brings. We were reflecting on moments where God reminded us of hope.

I brought up the idea of how us duck hunters always hoped for that next group. Not a pass shot, but the 5 pack of mallards who just give it up. And I asked her, what if I had hope that God will do what he says he’ll do like I do in those mallards.

The next morning I shipped out on a solo hunt, a thing I try to do at least once a week during duck season. I got the spot I wanted, I got set up, sat down and looked over at Juno and said, “Juno, I forgot my gun at home…”

I started to get mad, then quickly caught myself. “I’m going to believe God has something good for me today!”

Juno and I went back to the car, drove home, got my gun, and drove all the way back. We walked back in about 45 mins after legal light with ducks circling over our set up.

I quickly got loaded and sat down behind my tree, ready for a little bit of action. It started with a pintail Drake, a true treat in the area I was hunting. Over the course of the next 2 hours Juno and I polished off an easy limit, ending with a big fat greenhead.

Not how I expected this morning to go, but how I hoped it would.

After I got all packed up, I looked over at Juno. Hoping for another retrieve, not realizing that our hunt was over. I quickly snapped this pic as a reminder to have hope like Juno. Always eagerly anticipating what God has next for us.

Found this photo yesterday and it reminded me of a convo that and I recently had.

It revolved around how Ringnecks don’t get a lot of love, and once every 10 years MIGHT make it onto a or cover.

So, here’s to the ringnecks. One of the most photogenic fowl around. Also I love how you can see the purple/brown ring on his neck in this photo.

Leagues above the rest

I got asked to help with product testing on this vest over the last year and give my unfiltered/unbiased opinions to create “Man’s Best Dog Vest”. R&D team spent countless hours tweaking, testing, & asking for feedback from product testers who use and abuse gear.

When I say “leagues above the rest” I mean it. I’ve tried all the “best” vests but this one is next level. What really sold me on it is Juno’s opinion on it.

She absolutely hates wearing a vest. In the past she freezes up and doesn’t move or lacks drive when wearing one. I was so surprised when I put on the latest Gunner vest that she acted completely normal.

Juno approved is all I needed. Also, Bottomland was a plus.

Some places have duck hunters, others have duck culture.

One of my favorite things about hunting Reelfoot lake is just that. It’s almost like you’ve left the state and entered a land of its own.

The way they talk, the gear they use, and of course the way they “ank”. There’s just no other place like it.

There are a few shots from last January, shot for for their Reelfoot Kennel drop. It just feels different to be in a blind at Reelfoot, here’s my shot at trying to capture that.
