Mochi does this face after he gets a treat. Only then. Every time.
So I know exactly how to make it happen and I still miss it constantly, because it lasts about a second and he's already looking for the next treat.
I have a lot of photos of him with his mouth halfway open looking deranged. I have a few good ones.

Every cat in this project started out unsure of me. A stranger, in their house, with a big camera. Some hid. Some watched from across the room. Not one of them walked up and posed. And every single one ended up with a photo their person loved. So if you've been telling yourself your cat is too skittish, too unfriendly, or too weird for a session, I want you to know I heard that about half these cats and it was never true. I come to you. This year I photographed cats for The Catio for their calendar. I brought the idea to them and they agreed to partner with me and advertise the contest. It turned out bigger than I expected.
If you don't know them: The Catio is a local rescue doing real work for cats who need it, and all the proceeds from the calendar go straight to them. I take the photos, they get the money, the cats get help.
This month I'm going to show you a lot of what happened during these sessions. Some of the cats were easy right away. Most needed time to warm up first. If you've been worried your cat is too difficult to photograph, these sessions are the best proof I have that they're not.

You have four thousand photos of your pet and not one of them is on a wall.
I'm going to spend all of September talking about this, so here's the short version. It's not that you don't care enough. It's that a camera roll never ends. Film has an ending. You took 24 pictures, dropped it off, and a week later you were holding prints, whether or not you were thoughtful about it. Your phone doesn't work that way. There's always a better photo next weekend, so choosing now feels early and choosing from four thousand photos feels impossible.
Nothing is telling you to stop. That's the whole problem, and it's fixable.

Fall dates are open. Sessions are $185. If you've been thinking about a canvas this year, for your wall or for someone else, fall is a good time to book. The version where you tell me he has never once come when called or that she'll be under the bed for the entire hour.
