In times of trouble, Mother Dolly comes to me, whispering words of wisdom....

You know how sometimes you can just look at someone and know they’re one of those people who just radiate this incredibly warm, sun-like aura of kindness & compassion? Dolly, for me (and of I’m sure for many others) is one of those people.

Gentle yet fierce, smart & witty, humble & gracious, generous & wise. Lover of cemeteries, a good story, & humanity. She knew how to write a good song (if you know me, you know Jolene is my all time favorite karaoke song) & she knew how to be a good human. She is someone we should all aspire to be, I know I do. A fellow weirdo & dreamer, she is our Appalachian Americana folk goddess & will be sorely missed.

This meadow of beautiful white flowers (still trying to determine what they actually are - so if anyone with a green thumb knows, feel free to share) has been calling my name every single time I drive by it. While it may look like it’s out in the middle of nowhere, it’s actually right next to an extremely busy road & also right next to a 55+ retirement community.

Self-portraiture has been a love/hate relationship lately (more on that later, I’ve been mulling over starting a Substack for lengthy musings) but I think it boils down to a few things - feeling a creative block/feeling creatively stifled, perfectionism, & “if you don’t use it, you lose it.”

It’s been quite a while since I’ve felt comfortable enough with my creativity to go out & take photos and I thought it was finally time to rip off the bandaid. And with that gorgeous meadow practically at my doorstep, it felt like a gentle invitation to try again. So at sunset on a Monday evening, I decided to give myself permission to take bad photos and permission to maybe not even post them, but to do the thing anyway.

And all that inner turmoil, turned into photos that I am extremely proud of. And not only that but, I’ve been feeling brave enough to try different ways of sharing/collaging together my photos too. So, trust me when I can say if you get in your own head too much, you’ll never act on anything. So take the photos, create the art, make the music, do the thing. And if it’s bad, that’s OK, its another opportunity to try again. But you may just surprise yourself with what you’re capable of

✨🏰In the shadow of the great towers, she wandered. Stepping in the invisible paths of people past & present. What was intended as a folly, is a monument to the dreamers and romantics who spin their own stories from its ruin.

🍃🌳Some of my most memorable photography escapades are shaped by what I am convinced is a touch of the otherworldly stepping into the mortal plane. The day this was taken, I had left/lost my shawl along the path to these towers. As Vanessa & Samuel French waited in the car, I ran back to retrieve it from the long, winding path.

✨🐇I was about halfway down the path, with the ambience of the forest echoing around me, when what I initially thought was a small dog, was actually a large Irish hare that had hopped into the center of the path about 10 ft away from where I was standing. We had about 30 seconds of uninterrupted eye contact, as I held my breath in the stilless. That 30 seconds felt like a lifetime & was one of the most magical encounters I’ve ever had.

✨🧚‍♀️It isn’t my only encounter with the fae folk, but the Irish hare is viewed as a liminal, otherworldly creature & is often associated with shapeshifting witches, fairy magic, and ancient goddesses.

🥀Perhaps I’m just sentimental and a bit away with the fairies myself, but have you had any magical animal encounters or things happen that you know were a message from beyond the veil?

🍃✨Aug 1. The air was thick with heat. August is most certainly here. Went to the old stone barn in the forest. Ate cherries that stained my fingers blood red. Sat for a time in the still & quiet. Crickets as company. Slowly coming back to myself

🌳Bottling up the return of this feeling, of being creative again and trying new things; finding new ways of storytelling & creating. I think I’m realizing I’m not a photography creator, or a travel creator, or a personal style/lifestyle creator. I’m a storyteller trying to help people notice the beauty, the history, and the quiet magic that’s already around them. The story is the crux of creation
